Michaels Utah County Board of Realtors "The stockings were hung from the chimney with care...," as the famous holiday poem says,, but did that care include making sure those stockings were fire retardant? The Utah County Board of Realtors and its members offer the following home safety tips to ensure a happy and safe holdiay season for you and your family: Decorating your home or apartment for the holiday season should be a joyous event, but at this time of the year, it's important to pay extra attention to the safety factors, particularly those involving possible fires. Most homes are dryer during the winter months due to heaters and fireplaces. This dryness, combined with increased electrical usage, open flames from holiday candles and generally a busier household, necessitates extra careful attnetion. Carefully check all of your electrical decorations, particularly those which may have been sitting in a damp basement for the past 12 months. The National Fire Protection Association reports that during the 1980s there were 560 structural fires annually involving Christmas trees. A dry Christmas tree and poorly-wire- d lights can caqse a disaster. Make sure all electrical cords, lights and ornaments are approved by a testing agency, such as Underwriters Laboratories (UL), and are in good condition. Check for frayed ends or loose connections. Make sure that all extension cords are placed out of the normal traffic path in your home and that no furniture or other objects are resting on the cords. If you have pets, keep in mind their traffic patterns as well, and plan accordingly. Keep your Christmas tree moist by checking the water level daily, selecting decorative lights which do not such as radiators, generate large amounts of heat televisions and hot air ducts. The lights should be turned on only when there is an adult present in the home. Never leave tree lights on overnight. If you have an artificial tree, make sure it's fire retradant. Fire retardant spray is available for both artificial and live trees. Scented holiday candles can make a home warm and festive. Like tree lgihts, though, it's important never to leave a candle lit when ah adult is not present to supervise its burning. Make sure the base or candleholder is sufficent to maintain dripping wax, and take care that there is nothing near the burning flame which could ignite. Carefully extingusih the flame when leaving the room, and keep all matches and lighters out of the reach of small children. The kitchen is often one of the busiest rooms in the house daring the holidays. Take careful note that stove top burners have not inadvertently been left turned on. If you have small children in the house, you may want to keep them away from the kitchen during meal preparation times. It is easy to become distracted when trying to prepare a number of food. items. Ask an older child or visiting friend or relative to keep small children occupied while a large meal is being prepared. If there are no cigarette or pipe smokers in your ' household, but you anticipate entertaining guests who smoke, make sure you have an adequate number of ashtrays available, or request that your guest not smoke in your home. A stray ash can smolder for hours before ingiting in a piece of furniture or carpeting. Following the opening of gifts, bag all of the excess wrapping paper and ribbons, and remove to a metal garbage can or dump site. In the event of a household fire, excess paper will increase the speed at which a fire will spread. If your home or apartment does not have smoke detectors, now is the time to have them installed. If you do have smokedetectors, check the batteries. If you're, not sure how old the batteries are, replace them. It is better to be safe than sorry. A small fire extinguisher is an important household item as well. Purchase one that will extinguish all types of fire including electrical and grease fires. Keep it in a handy place in your home. In the event of a fire, you don't want to spend time searching for it. Review its proper usage with all members of your household. You may even (See HOLIDAY Page E8) |
