The Writer's Guild even mails surveys to its members every few years, checking the extent of age discrimination in the business. early, not all the young moguls in Hollywood have heard of Charles Bennett. Or, if they have, they assume that the writer of such classics as "Foreign Correspondent," "The Thirty-Nin- e Steps" and "The Man Who Knew Too Much" has long since tottered off into the sunset. But don't look for Bennett in the palatial back bedroom of a Sunset Boulevard mansion, reliving his - ..i nf senility like a Norma Desmond. Bennett, happily ensconced in the Ix)S Angeles home he bought more than four decades ago, is hard at work on a new screenplay. It will be the 59th in his career. He is the oldest writer in the history of film ever to be paid to write a major screenplay. : 'I love it," said Bennett, of 20th Century Fox's decision to remake 1'Blackmail," which he first wrote as a stage hit for Tallulah Bank-hea- d in 1928 and which was turned into a film by Alfred Hitchcock a year later. But he knows how rare the opportunity is. "It's a young man's industry," said Bennett in a recent telephone interview. He is well aware of the astronomical prices commanded by such screenwriters as Joe Eszter-ha- s, who was paid $3 million for "Basic Instinct," and Shane Black, who got $1 million for "lethal Weapon II." :"I think I was born too early," Bennett said. "I'd love to get a jHillion dollars for a picture." Without missing a beat, he laughed and said, "I intend to get a million for my next one." Bennett was approached to write the remake of "Blackmail" by Stuart Birnbaum and William Blay-loca team who saw the original film for the first time when they were students at -- k, writer-produc- the University of Southern California film school 20 years ago. The original "Blackmail," starring Annae Ondra, John Longden and Cyril Richard, involved a Scotland Yard inspector who is blackmailed for concealing that his girlfriend is involved in a murder. It was the first talkie for Hitchcock, who also wrote the screenplay. When they decided to produce the remake and commission a to speak at BYU forum IJ Brigham Young University's Tuesday Forum Nov. 27 will feature Pulitzer Prize winner Gwendolyn Brooks. Poet Laureate of Illinois since 1968, Brooks gained national recognition for her first book, which Auiju tu a ue vision of black life. With her second book of poems, "Annie Allen," (1949), she became the first black writer to win the Pulitzer Prize for poetry. Shortly after her birth in Topeka, 7 Iff V script, Birnbaum and Blaylock learned that so much time had gone by, the rights had reverted to Bennett's the original material 1928 play. Birnbaum, 41, said they thought Bennett was dead. They were delighted to find him alive and well in Los Angeles. Birnbaum said they hired a team of new writers to remake "Blackmail," intending that Bennett's involvement be merely cursory. They sent a draft over to Bennett's Coldwater Canyon house and Bennett asked if he could give them a few notes. "A couple of days later he delivered a document," said Birnbaum. "It was not only a critique but a total reconstruction of the story that had been written using only the best elements. It was amazing, right on target." Exit the team of writers and enter Bennett. The announcement was made Wednesday at a press conference at the theater by board chairman David R. Richards. ; Pageant headquarters at the Pageant workshop will remain in Utah County, Richards said. ; The selection of a professionally equipped theater has been under consideration by the Pageant board Of trustees for several seasons, culminating a search throughout north Utah County and the greater Salt Lake area. j The Pageant has been produced at the American Fork High school auditorium annually since June, 1973. Richards credited the support of Amfrrican Fork City for helping the arts organization, financially troubled two years ago, continue on and emerge even stronger. The Pageant has divested itself of the pallet, modern dance, theater and three musical groups which it had sponsored, in an effort to cut costs and reduce debt. They are now "in the black" as they begin preparations for the 19th Pageant season. Pageant director David 0. Brock- - bank related the success of the show during the Ricks College production, opening their "Center Stage" performing arts series in September. That was the first time the production had been staged in a professionally equipped facility, with both amene-tie- s appreciated by patrons and participants. They will again appear at Ricks College this season and are considering other invitations to tour with the unique 1991 Pageant season will open Friday, June 7, continuing nightly except Sundays through June 29; a total of only 20 performances. "The Last Supper," a masterpiece mural by Leonardo da Vinci, will close the new show. The 1991 production will comprise 22 scenes, including many new paintings, such as "The Finding of Moses," a painting by Sir Lawrence sculpture works, jewelry, porcelains, a unique carved plate and minature works of art.
