As you tennis aficionados know, the U.S. Open Championships have been one of the big stories on our sports pages for the past couple of weeks. While this is being written, American Jimmy Connors, an old man of something like 36 or so, is still in the tournament. And if you watched him win one of his late matches you might have seen him throw a temper tantrum over something or other. It is my personal opinion that when tennis players who react as childishly as Connors and John McEnroe do from one match to another, it is not so much to get at the officials, but to play games with their opponent's mind. Hey, gamesmanship or is a way of life in all sports. But tennis players seem to have its most abusive form down to the finest degree. And it has been that way as long as I can remember. Gamesmanship is the art of getting on your rival's nerves so that he or she concentrates more on you and what you are doing than on his or her game and what he or she should be doing. For example, the best piece of gamesmanship I witnessed first hand in tennis happened back in the 1950s. It was in the days before open tennis became the rage and amateur tennis was king while the pros had to resort to barnstorming trips around the world to make an honest living and the top amateurs played the tournament snap the picture, Pancho would! reach up and tip Trabert's hai-do- J Evan over his eyes. This went on for several takes! At first I thought it was just 4 joke but it was obvious that Tra! bert didn't find it funny. At one point Trabert doubled his fist$-an- d turned on Pancho and I thought they were going to exchange blows. Finally, the picture was taken! But Pancho wasn't through play! ing games with Tony. As the two men warmed up for their match, Pancho would take Tony's hardest strokes behind his back, swatting the ball across the net in a manner that indicated Tony's best was a piece of cake to the old pro. It was so bad and so obvious what was going on that cynics in the press called amateur tennis under-the-tab- le "shamateur tennis." Jack Kramer was the promoter of the pro tour at the time in Trabert. Gonzales had grown up in a middle class family in Los Angeles but was a street fighter. Trabert had played college basketball for Cincinnati and was schooled in the belief that tennis was a gentleman's game. Salt Lake City was one of the stops early in the tour and their appearance, as I remember it, Hey, Trabert didn't have a chance when play started.
