I . , 0 j ' 111 Sophia wows them at the piano to Miss Sweetheart Runner-u- p j RENEEC NELSON Herald Today Editor At the recent National Sweetheart Pageant Sophia Symko, Salt Lake City, broke a piano string with her rendition of Spanish Rhapsody by Franz Liszt. Despite this, she went on to win the talent award and to become first runnerup in the national pageant. "The snapping twang of the broken string frightened me for a moment," she said. "But the people in charge noticed, and told the judges what had happened." It startled the entire audience. Symko was playing the same number that won her a preliminary talent award at the Miss Utah Pageant in June. Her rendition was startling there too even without a string breaking. "Sophia has more power at the piano than I've ever seen," said Norm Nielsen, President of the Miss Utah Pageant. The annual National Miss Sweetheart Pageant took place over the Labor Day weekend in in state Hoopeston, III. where 20 first runners-upreliminaries to the Miss America Pageant comGina Christen-sen- . pete, Miss Utah's first runner-u- p Spanish Fork, declined to go, so Symko who was second runner-u- p grabbed the opportunity. In addition she will be judged on interview and talent. Gown at right will be worn Tuesday evening in the Boardwalk Parade. Marianne will perform the same lyrical jazz number that brought her the Miss Utah title in June. The final night of the Miss America Pageant will be televised Saturday at 8 p.m. on Channel 2.
