Show ougar spikers topple Cardinal, : By DOROTHY K.NOELL Herald Staff Writer - Entering the 1987 season, the third-ranke- d BYU women's volleyball team had several goals the first of which was to beat fourth-ranke- d Stanford, which had downed the Cougars in the West Regional finals twice. ; Friday night, the Cougars reached that goal when thev delighted a boisterous crowd of 2.649 in the Marriott Center by whipping the Cardinal 10-1- 15-- But even coach Elaine Michaelis Jidn't figure on the Cougars doing ?uch a thorough job. never thought we could win a "game with Stanford with the score of that final game," she marveled. "I expected this to be a match of siding out. But by midway through the third game, we shut down their big hitters and our blocking and 'i defense came alive." Michaelis was right about the siding out for much of the match. The first three games were tense, side-oduels before the Cougars dominated the fourth. Afterwards, both Michaelis and Stanford coach Don Shaw were cautious about what it all meant. "We have to remember," Michaelis noted, "that this is just a win. It is a nice win over a very good Stanford team, n but it is just a win.' Shaw claimed he wasn't all that bothered by the loss. "Of course, we want to win every game, but I don't think this match meant quite as much to us as it did to BYU." he said. "This isn't December. It's just September. This was just another preseason game." But don't try to tell the players ut pre-seaso- n pre-seaso- that particularly the Cougars. Both teams played with abandon throughout the match, diving for balls and doing anything just to keep the ball in play. The Cougars cleaned up their act after that and made it tough for Stanford to run its offense. Still, game two was a tense, exciting game of 41 service exchanges. Stanford led 0 before tie.
