Show jPP9 Thursday June THE HERALD Provo Utah 1? 20 1985 NCAA Convention First-Roun- of Meetings Subject Integrity' - NEW ORLEANS 1UPI1 Col- lege and university presidents attending a special meeting of the National Collegiate Athletic Association will consider a tough package of regulations that officials hope will end the ethical and legal nightmares that have plagued college sports. Within the last year, the .NCAA has had to deal with frequent reports of drug abuse, academic cheating and corrupt recruiting. The topper was the recent scandal at Tulane. The integrity of intercollegiate athletics is the main topic of the New Orleans meetings which began today. University representatives will point-shavin- g consider establishing "major" and "secondary" categories of violations and tougher penalties for coaches who break rules. Schools that commit major violations could be prohibited from competing in some sports for up to two years. Major violations are defined as those that provide or "an extensive recruiting " com- petitive advantage Repeat offenders, those with multiple major offenses during a five-yea- r period, also will be dealt with harshly under the proposed rules changes However, university officials may grant special consideration to schools that uncover and report violations before they are caught by the NCAA. Under another proposed rule, coaches who violate NCAA rules may be punished "even if he or she" is employed by an institution other than the one at which the violation occurred." "This rule should have been there all along." said Mississippi State Athletic Director Charley Scott. "This will do away with situations where coaches violate the rules and then pick up and escape to another institution." Hootie Ingram, athletic director at Elorida State, believes the recent spotlight on intercollegiate cheating is a good deterrent. Safor Takes Over As Mead Coach For I've been in this game tor about 30 years now." Ingram said, "and in my opinion, there's less cheating going on in the business now than at any :me in the past." Officials at the NCAA convention also will consider establishing minimum requirements tor women's teams at Division schools. The proposal would reinstituquire the Division tions, the nation's largest colleges, to have six female varsity teams by September 1986. seven b the following year and eight by September 1988! Also to be discussed, but not voted upon, is Proposal No. 5. which would "ensure that student athletes are held accountable for serious violations of NCAA rules and regulations in which they knowingly participate" and a proposal to limit the number of football or basketball games a team may play in a year. One of the nation's top college football coaches was intrigued by NEW YORK (AP) Ted Sator, York Rangers. "For where we plan to go and Avhat we plan to achieve, the New ;York Rangers feel that Ted Sator is: the right choice for the task," dangers General Manager Craig ;Patrick said at a news conference. Sator, 35, replaces Herb Brooks, who was fired midway through the losingest season in Ranger history. Patrick handled the team the rest of the way during a season that saw the Rangers suffer a team-recor- d After the playoffs, Sator didn't hide his desire to move up to a head coaching spot: it is a career goal of mine and an attainable goal," he said. Patrick met with Sator several times during the last few weeks while weeding out candidates. Sator also was interviewed for the head job with the Minnesota North Stars. It wasn't immediately known whether the Rangers would compensate the Flyers in the form of a player or a draft choice. Sator, a native of Utica, N.Y., defeats before being swept in three games by the Flyers in the first round of the Stanley tions! since what we've been trying for these many years has not been effective," said the coach, who requested that his name not be used. "There needs played college hockey at Bowling Green University and one year with the New York Raiders of the World Hockey Association. He spent seven years as a coach in the Swedish leagues, where he won five championships, before accepting the job with the Flyers. Sator. who was an assistant coach for the United States team in last September's Canada Cup series, is known for his work in advanced training methods and also is an expert instructor in power skating. In 1979, he was one of only 10 American coaches seCanadialected to attend a three-ween-Soviet training clinic in Moscow, and four years later became the first American to be invited to xninor leagues, juniors and colleges," Patrick said. "There are a lot of good people out there, but 'the answer kept coming up Ted 3 LAIWW I II U I June July 1 - 5 July 8- - 12 July 15 - 19 July 22 - 26 July 29 - Aug. 2 Orem Rec.
