The study is on childbearing in China and the 10 women must be willing to share their birth experience. In a country of 1.1 billion people, with concerns of overpopulation, it doesn't seem like it will be difficult to find 10 women who have recently given ) of kindness brings woman within reach of goal A. simple act By PAT MARTINEZ Pjuc Two women get on the bus. One is an older woman and the other is her daughter. They stand in the aisles as there are no empty seats. The nursing student is struck with the thought to give up the seats she and her brother occupy. She considers the thought from all "someone else angles will offer their seat," or "there's another 1 12 hours of bus riding! I don't WANT to stand that long." The impression persists. an uncrowded portion of the Great Wall where they will spend the night. It is tourist-typ- e an bus used by the locals for travel. The bus is crowded, but they are fortunate to all have seats. People board the bus and have to stand, but since the bus stops several times on its way out of Beijing, people also get off and the standing folk can sit. Finally, the aisles are clear and every seat is taken. Just one more stop. . woman hands her business card to the student and tells her if she ever needs anything while jn Beijing to give her a call. She thanks her for the offer and is about to walk to the back of the bus to talk with her sister, when she has another thought. She explains her research to the Chinese woman. Does she know of any women she could interview? The Chinese woman smiles and points to her business ld long-distan- card. Beneath her name it reads, "Personnel Department.'' When the women take their seats, they are profusely thankful. They are going to the mountains because the mother is in poor health and also has a sore leg. The elderly woman was having a hard time standing. They talk for a while and the two women share their tomatoes with the nursing student and her Postscript: Giving up her bus seat was an incredibly simple act that generated a huge success.
