Today's winner is: KERINE Brown's CHANG, 21 Standfast Rd Town P.O., St. Anc Jamaica In certain parts of the world, where other animals would die from lack of food and water a camel may be able to survive for a long time This is because a camel carries its food and water with it. For days before it starts on a journey, a camel does nothing but eat and drink It eats so much that a hump of fat, perhaps 100 pounds in weight, rises on its back. The food is turned into fat and is stored in that hump on its back The water the camel drinks is stored in little bags which line the walls of its stomach. With such provisions, a camel is able to travel several days between water holes without drinking, and for an even longer time with no nourishment except what it draws from the fat of its hump. At the end of a long journey the hump will have lost its firm shape and will flop to one side in flabby folds. The camel will then have to rest for a long time to recover its strength. Of course, being able to store its food and water is very important to surviving in a desert. But a camel has many other features that help make this possible. Its eyes have an extra lid through which it can see in sandstorms. Its bushy eyebrows and long lashes are protection against blowing sands. Its ear passages have long hairs to protect them from sand. It can close its nostrils during a sandstorm. Its feet have soft cushions, that spread out and keep it from sinking in the loose sand. So you see that a camel is really suited for desert life. Sansom x - MONTREAL (UPI) Montreal Expos' President and General Manager John McHale Monday announced that he had received a request from pitcher Stan Bahnsen to be traded. I'nder the agreement between the owners and players, any player with five years major league service can ask to be traded after his contract expires.
