Early in the season BYU s secondary was burned by the long pass in almost every game, but in the last three outings the UTEP. Region Six basketball coaches may be a bit wary of the Pleasant Grove Vikings as the basketball season approaches. Despite a trio of outstanding returnees from last year's fourth place Region Six finisher, veteran mentor Keith Allred is himself slightly unsure of the true capabilities of his team, making the Vikings an unknown quantity in the region chase "We should be much better material-wisthan we were last year." Allred "We have better explained talent and more size, but at this point we are just getting started and it is difficult to tell how we will perform.' Anchoring the Viking hopes are Mark Atwood and David Ratliff, returning starters who opposing teams will have little trouble remembering from past e Atwood returns at the iorward slot, he makes up for lack of size with strength and determination The powerful senior paced the Viking scoring effort with an 11 2 average last year and will be counted upon to continue ins shooting prowess as the season progresses Ratliff is also a senior, but he is the mainstay on the guard line "David has to he one of the premier guards in the state this year Like Mark, he is a good competitor." Coach Allred commented. Another returnee who was a starter tor the Vikes last year is guard Kevin Peay, a senior "who can burn the nets from anywhere on the floor. Kevin is a great shooter and will be a great asset to us, but he is still improving in other areas and is not yet a sure starter for us. Allred said." Battling Peay for the starting guard berth are Russell Johnson, a good playmaker and defensive specialist, and Scott Kohler. who Coach Allred claims is performing very well The forward position opposite Atwood is also open and is being consenior Trent Searlc tested for by and 3 juniors Craig Giles and Kevin Ash.
