By FRANCES DIETRICH It may never have occurred to you to buy a bunch of dishcloths, sew them together and fashinn a skirt. But when textile designers and fashion makers went to the think-tanfor new ideas for '77, they came up with torchon. This is a nifty French word which means "duster, dish clout (cloth)." The New York City Seventh Avenue savants gussied it up for dresses, pants and tops. Stringy yarn is knit or woven in the open-worconcept and zinged with stripes of plaids in primary colors. The torchon group includes a wide range of fabric of the utility type: tea toweling, dish cloth, tablecloth checks, ticking, fishnet and even a thermal version. How are these fabrics used? The ends of the floating yarns are brought through to the right side of the fabric and snipped to give an eyelash effect. McCall's has a pattern for an ankle-lengt- h dress, which features leno. Very full long sleeves are elasticized at the wrists. The scoop neck is also elasticized and worn A self-sascompletes a romantic look. A diamond-shaptopper is shown in leno. The top corners of back and front are cut into a jewel neckline, which is finished with channel and drawstring. Worn over wide, matching pants, it's charming, also breezy. h e When home sewing with leno fabric, notches. Instead, mark with tailor r treat it as you would any soft woven tacks in thread. sheer. Underline in lightweight solid color fabric when necessary. In preparing for cutting, fold the fabric lengthwise on a prominent chainstitch and cut the crosswise ends a noticeable ridge. Pull along diagonally, if the ends need to be squared. Test the top and bottom ends to see if unwind. If so, use the end that unwinds at the top of all pattern sections. Use the "with nap" pattern layout. Cut with very sharp shears in long, even strokes. Don't cut chain-stitch- ballpoint needle with thread; stitch length of 12 for straight seams and 15 for curves. If the fabrjc is quite open, wrap the presser "toes" with Scotch tape. To prevent seam slippage under strain, stitch rayon bias seam binding into the seam. First, cut the folded seam binding down the center, which gives you two narrow folded strips. Open the fold of one of the narrow strips and place the fold over the seamline. Stitch in place. Turn the edges of the seam binding toward the cut edges of the seam allowances. Blindstitch all four layers of fabric, that is, two of seam binding and two of fashion fabric, along the edge.
