Annual Mineral Show Features Artifact Display rare collection of jewelry and gold and copper metallurgy items from central and South America will be featured at the 19th annual Gem and Mineral Show in Provo, April 1, 2 and 3. "A Parade of Gems" is sponsored by Timpanogos Gem and Mineral Society and the public is invited to attend, without charge, Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Eldred Center, 270 West 500 North. More than 100 members of the Utah County rockhound organization will be displaying their private collections of jewelry, gems, mineral specimens and artifacts. Creative silver and gold designs created by local silversmiths and goldsmiths will also be shown. There will be a fluorescent exhibit, invited dealers, a silent auction, door prizes, swap table and a catered dining area. The special display is the private collection of Dr. Paul Cheesman, coordinator of Ancient Scriptures, Center for Religious Subjects, Brigham Young University, and are the result of 25 years of research. Items were purchased, traded or received as gifts from the governments of various countries and were cleared through the customs laws. Since jade was a favorite gemstone of the people of these countries, it is used in much of the jeweh y , combined with other gemstones such as turquoise, shells and hollow gold balls. Other gold items include a crown and breastplate, a wrist ornament and cup. Other items from the period, circa 750 A.D., include a large sacrificial knife, silver cups, gold cups, medical tools, masks and tweezers. In addition to the original pieces there are replicas of other gold items from the areas where many of the pieces were found in ancient graves. Descriptive material accompanies the display. A Lent Series Speakers Named for Tonight Betty Ure, a counselor for two elementary schools in the Granite School District, will be the speaker tonight at 7:30 o'clock at the Provo Community Church (UCC) in the third of a series of lenten programs sponsored by the Provo Community Church, Orem Community Church, and Springville Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Ure graduated in sociology from the University of Mchigan, and received her Master of Social Work degree from the University of Utah.
