Fouts signed the contract at the Charger offices Wednesday. "We have more than reached an agreement with Dan Fouts," said Charger owner Eugene V. Klein. "We have just completed signing e an document." No details of the contract were revealed, but Klein said it would keep Fouts with the Chargers "until about the time he starts collecting Social Security." The Chargers thought they had an agreement with Fouts April 26. Klein announced to reporters covering the NFL draft that day that he and Fouts had reached a verbal agreement and would soon sign a contract. That agreement fell apart a week later when differences of opinion in the language of the verbal agreement surfaced between the team and Fouts. Klein said he contacted Fouts at his Oregon home recently to reiterate the fact that he wanted Fouts to be his quarterback. "It's the highest paying (contract) in the history of the NFL," Klein said. "Dan is deserving of it." "I'm very happy with the contract," Fouts said. "I'd be crazy to want to be the quarterback for any other team," "When you have struggled for 850-pag- something and both sides are happy it is worth it," said Fouts, when asked about the effect his holdout had on his relations with the Chargers, the only team he has played for in his 10 year career.
