Show Thursday, May House Panel OKs Coalinga Salvador Aid Plan Applies For - WASHINGTON (UPI) The House Foreign Affairs Committee has joined its Senate counterpart in overwhelmingly voting for some form of compromise on military aid for El Salvador. An administration official indicated President Reagan will settle for a lesser amount of aid, at least for now. The latest vote came Wednesday when the House Foreign Affairs Committee voted 36-- 1 to approve military aid on the condition the government begin unconditional talks with opposing forces. On the previous day, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee voted 16-- 0 for a somewhat different plan. Under the House committee plan, the Salvadoran government would face a mandatory cutoff of funds if the talks do not get under way within 90 days after enactment of the bill. The aid would continue it leftist rebels reject the talks or set preconditions. The committees differ on the amounts of aid, and the final amount would have to be worked out by a conference committee after the House and Senate vote on the proposals. The House bill sets military aid for El Salvador at $65 million in 1984, while the Senate bill would provide $76 million. The Senate committee agreed to provide an additional $20 million for 1983, but the House panel rejected any more aid for this year. "We're prepared to live with it," Undersecretary of State William Schneider said following the House vote. On Tuesday, Schneider termed the Senate committee vote "a constructive step in the right direction." Reagan appealed to Congress April 27 to approve his full aid request to help El Salvador battle leftist guerrillas.
