U 1 Three weeks ago, Gary FurI niss of BYU's , II basketball team was contacted II by Gil Brandt of the Dallas Cowboys, interested in recruiting him as a tight end. Under the watchful eye of Gary Fwoln Dallas' scout, some ran Gary pass patterns and dash. Although his the time was not as fast as he would have hoped, he was told to work out with the weights and stay in J)h(m 3008 Irons 4llt U4f I Wit ftfi Wedge. Nevertheless, he ran; again his speed was not what he had hoped, (a 4.9) and again the suggestion came, "dedicate yourself to rigorous football training, and stay in touch." Basically, his desire is to establish himself as a professional athlete ... to attain security and stability for his family and himself, and to succeed ... Whether that will be in pro football or pro basketball is, Gary's "wonderful" dilemma; one which many college athletes would like to be facing. Because of his coordination and size, the idea of Gary Furniss as a tight end stirs the imagination. If he "bulked up" Gary would stand 5 lbs. That, along with at his agility and sure touch would insure a quarterback an awesome target. His strength and determination cannot be questioned. And anyone who has witnessed his play under the basket can attest to his aggressiveness and confidence. Gary feels he could make the transition from basketball to football with little problem. He has a good, sound football background, having played his high school ball in Idaho (football, basketball, baesball and track). He played wide receiver, and then in his junior and senior years, played quarterback-receive- r. Midway through his senior year, he was moved to tight end and wide receiver. When Furniss graduated, he had succeeded in being noticed by some good football schools, and was recruited by Iowa, Colorado, Boise State, Ricks, as well as USU, BYU and other area schools. He chose USU with the understanding that he would be able to play both of the sports he loved. It was a short-live- d idea, changed by the fact that the seasons overlapped, and in the end, the basketball coaches won. Gary's attention was focused on college basketball.
