When I turned 20, 1 went into mourning. Like Peter Pan, I never wanted to grow up. When I turned 30. 1 thought about and also aging taking my car ' I didn't know what she meant until she rubbed her smooth brow and bumped her hand along my forehead, which is developing furrows. When I expressed concern to my husband Don, his only reply was that next year we could harvest corn from the rows in my face. The passing years I have finally accepted. I can't do anything about them. I have joined those who say youth is a state of mind and stay current by keeping aware of the "You mean there was no Pac Man when you were a little girl," she asked me yesterday. "How did you live?" She also thinks my face is an- cient "Where did you get those big craters?" she asked me. I went through the "I really dig you" and "whatever's fair" stages. I flashed the peace sign like everyone else did. I learned the language of "doing your own thing," and I've even learned that beige is no longer a color; and double bagger doesn't mean two sacks of groceries. What I didn't count on was the deference to my still young, but advancing years. When I first came to the Herald almost eight years ago, I was the youngest member of the newsroom. Now, however, our office has a staff of young writers who think I was born in the back shop under the press plates when the Herald first started operating. When I approach them, I can see the glaze of respect cover their eyes, the same look I used to give my elders. It's enough to make me apply for Social Security. When I mentioned to one of them that I sure would like to get pregnant again, she looked at me incredulously, and blurted.without thinking, "But they would have to put you in the geriatric ward instead of the obstetrics ward." Maybe it's the way I dress. My clothes could best be classified as early ancient. Sunday. January 23, 1983 THE visited the U.S. Film and Video Festival in Park City this week and saw that I hadn't kept current. Everyone was trying very hard to look avant gard. Only the noisy creases in their brand new jeans when they moved gave them away. I made the mistake of wearing a dress. "Wow, look at that." one of the film goers said, "That woman has ankles, legs and everything." I left the festival feeling old and out of it. I went home and fixed Don his supper. When it came to this recipe, he asked me where I got such a dated dessert. "I'm into nostalgia," I snapped. "It was developed the same year you were born." "Vintage year," he mumbled.
