With Quilts Dare To Be t Dynamic .V M S V By APRYL COX Herald Staff Writer may wonder why sane people to want would spend hours cutting large pieces of fabric into small pieces just for the pleasure of rearranging them and sewing them back together. For some quilters, it is a hobby. Others have their own small business. All enjoy creating something beautiful. For Melissa Clark of Springville, quilting was therapy. When she started, she had six children seven years and younger. "It was either quilting or cracking up. When I was quilting, I could totally forget everything else." ... For her, it is also a link to the past. "When I look at an old quilt, 1 really feel a kinship to the women who made it. It was a great sacrifice for them. After working for 14 hours a day, it was a luxury to sit and quilt. "I read from a journal about a lady who said it took 25 years to make one quilt. She quilted when she was proud of her girls, when she was disappointed in her boys, when she hated her husband and when she loved him. She said it scared her to look at that quilt and think what it knew about her life." Now accepted as a legitimate art form, quilting was formerly banned from art shows.
