Show 2C THE GREEN SHEET Thursday, October 29, 1987 IS iy UU J U Art And Survival Combine In Hillcrest Crafts Class UNION. Art and Mountain Survival crafts come together in a Hillcrest high class taught by David Montgomery who feels, he says, "that a learning mountain survival skills should not be a lost art. " His class is open on a controlled basis to interested students, both boys and girls. He taught the mountain crafts at the Pioneer Craft house, suggested it be an addition to Hillcrest's schedule and reports that during the first year 100 kids signed up. According to Montgomery interest has been growing and it is "necessary to keep down the enrollment." .; The students must get many of their materials on their own from outside mountain trips. "After kids finish the class, they have a lot more reports Montgomery. Currently the students are making willow back-restportable chairs or beds of the type which Indians used. Montgomery studied art and got interested in mountain arts and history at places like Fort Bridger. "I began collecting stuff and learning how to make it," he said. "I had a tepee. I learned to make tordage or string for fishing line and knives and knife scabbards. I learned the history of the items and why they were made as they were. For instance the scabbard of the Indian was made so the enemy couldn't grab the knife. The scabbards were both functional andor decorative." He passes this knowledge on to the students in his class. One of the projects the class does is to make moccasins. According to Montgomery, Indians wore sandals prior to moccasins and he teaches students both, including a plains or s, :V"rJ- southwest type moccasin. The students dive into decorative work or beadwork for shirts, moccasins, scabbards and pouches. They learn about the more primitive type of decoration which involves the weaving of porcupine quills. "Porcupine quills are easy to find," he says," and the students hunt their own. It is important to teach trapping and hunting in the right way. "People should know correct hunting techniques although my class is not classified as a hunter safety course. We get into map reading, orienteering, plant study and primitive foods such as jerky. I even teach how to cut up meat. This can be useful knowledge," he adds. Fur is also one of the materials the students learn to use. They can make 1790 style Lewis and Clark hats and "we work with rawhide and learn how to tan buckskin and do finger weaving," said Montgomery. "I do not teach all of these skills, I bring in experts to teach the students. You can't be an expert on everything," he added. "Firestarting is a skill that I stress. We learn to start fire by friction and by flint and steel. We learn to use antlers and horns to make powder horns. I teach horn engraving and scrimshaw." The students find that they enjoy making a shirt, pants, dress or skirt out of buckskin, he said, "But is is expensive. It is aobut $30 a hide. We can sell it to them if they don't have rfb v I , . f x v j .JJ XJ r I.Jr i I I J . to do machines in the .vocational signmaking v classes. .
