Show Trip To California Is Necessity For West Jordan Youth WEST JORDAN. Many times when a family rides on a plane to Los Angeles they are headed for Disneyland, but this is not the case for Mike and Pat Bowden, and their very sick son, Michael Shane. Shane is 15 years old and suffers from a very rare disease, Aplastic Anemia. He has flown to U.C.L.A. hospital in Los Angeles to undergo a bone marrow transplant which is scheduled later this week. Bone marrow transplants cannot be performed in Utah, but only in California and Washington, D.C. In June the youth had his spleen removed at the Primary Children's Hospital and during the past couple of weeks he has had more than 24 blood transfusions. The Bowden family lives in West Jordan, but because of his interest in .horses Shane is a sophomore at ; Bingham high school. ; He has been very active in FFA and is a member of the rodeo club, r where he has won many trophies. He is also a member of the Draper Ridge Riding Club and likes doing leather work. Last year around Labor Day Shane expressed to his mother that he was having difficulty breathing. His family took him to Primary Children's Hospital where he was diagnosed as having allergy problems. Later he began having many nosebleeds and the doctors determined that he might have leukemia. After having many tests performed at Primary Children's Hospital and also checked at hospitals back East and at U.C.L.A., it was concluded that he had Aplastic Anemia and needed a bone marrow transplant. Shane's parents, 12 year old brother, Kyle, and 16 year old sister, Stacie, have had tests performed to determine whose bone marrow is WW 1 most compatible with Shane's for me transplant. It was decided that his sister Stacie will be the bone marrow doner. The cost of the operation alone is more than $150,000, excluding many of the expensive tests performed on Shane and on his family members. The family's medical insurance covers only a portion of the operation, medical, and hospital ex- penses. Therefore, neighbors, friends, and community members have united their efforts to set up fundraisers and a contribution fund for Shane's bone marrow transplant. We also offer a complete line of: PUN SERVICES 1 EAST MAIN (8700 So. family." It will be held Nov. 20th at West Jordan middle school auditorium beginning at 7:30 p.m. For each $5.00 donation, a ticket for a prize drawing will be given. Members of the West Jordan Chamber of Commerce and local businesses are donating the prizes. The FFA (Future Farmer of America) at Bingham high school has scheduled a blood drive for Shane's blood transfusions, to be held in the commons area at the school Nov. 25th from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00p.m. PTA's in West Jordan and also the high school seminaries are planning on holding some fundraisers as well as The State Riding Club.
