We called up Ginny Berg, an artist and close neighbor friend, and asked if she'd help us paint it. She said yes, and away we went." : SALT LAKE. This October, the Quality Aging Program of Salt Lake County Aging Services is promoting the second annual "Talk About Prescription" month, a national health observance to promote safe and effective prescription drug use. The misuse of prescription drugs is one of the nation's major public health problems with the group of older people considered at the highest risk. In part, their special vulnerability relates to the large number of drugs they consume. Inadequate communications with their health care providers (doctors, nurses, pharmacists) about prescription drugs is also a significant cause of the misuse problem. Another factor is the misuse of drugs such as cold er medications, headache pills, digestive and bowel remedies, and even vitamin supplements. These are some of the facts regarding older people and prescription 29 drugs: Older Americans-nearl- y million people-mak- e up about 12 percent of the population, but they use about 25 percent of all prescriptions. By the year 2000, there will be about 35 million older citizens, who will take about half of all prescriptions dispensed. People over 60 have 40 percent of all adverse drug reactions. h of all U.S. hospital ad One-sixt- 12-1- 8, missions for patients over age 70 are for adverse drug reactions-a- t a cost of $21 billion annually. David Turner, Quality Aging Program Manager, is distributing, free of charge, a handy Medication Memo which informs a person how to ask appropriate questions of the health care providers and how to record their answers. Mr. Turner said he will send any reasonable number of the Medication Memos to folks for their personal use or for family members, groups or organizations. On Halloween Day twenty years ago, students from Mount-vieelementary carried their tote trays up a hill to begin school in the new Ridgecrest elementary. This week marks the 20th birthday for Ridgecrest and celebrations began on Monday when the teachers came to school dressed as individuals did in the sixties. An open house will be held this evening at 7 p.m., for anyone who has ever attended or worked at Ridgecrest. Tomorrow (Friday) the students will dress in the style of the sixties. An essay contest has been conducted in grades four, five and six and children in special education and kindergarten through third grade are making birthday cards for the school. On Friday, a time capsule will be buried. "Children are bringing small, timely items which are characteristic of 1987 to put in the capsule," said publicity specialist Janet Anderson, who requests that parents support the youngsters in their search and selection of items.
