A local artist wins a contest com parable to winning the Olympic Iecathlon championship in sports and our local neivs media seem to have taken no! more notice of n .it than of a decture in an Brownliterary tea Robert ilee s accomplishment in winning the National Federation of Mu- ,lsic Clubs' Young Artist 'Auditions is of great significance in our 'local scene. This contest has 'been the starting: point for many cf our most outstanding Amer iican artists, not only in piano, but in voice and strings. And cur own neighbor who has prac- tically had to beg for appear ances, both in the University and .otherwise, has gone to the na "tional convention of the Federr ated Music Clubs and has 'won It their outstanding approval. T is to be hoped that he will have 'enough time now, between . his in the major cities ..appearances ' of the country, to play us some , recitals here in Prcvo.. Today "he is: playing in Cincinnati. Just t what! the future holds for him is "a bit uncertain at this point, but .mention' has been made of a pos sible apperance with the Boston v Symphony as the' featured soloist sometime this spring or summer. those who realize "Together with ' jthe stature of his accomplish ment, I give my congratulations to Mr. Brownlee with thanks for the honor ho d has brought, to. us through, his hours of devoted practice and .dedicatecj. study at the keyboard. With the Utah Valley Opera Company now a reality, I feel it ts appropriate to make a few upon it. I have long felt the need to comment upon patronage in our community. Our "businesses and industries are the .'only sources to which artists and 'musicians can look for support of their important activities as far as finances are concerned. To ,'be sure, the University does some encouraging of the arts, but their scope is necessarily limited by vtheir function of., teaching the Students who come to them. This limitation works out in two ways: first, all of the activities of the University are directed toward -educational ends (or should be); Isecond, the artists who are associated with the University are teaching such hevy loads, that unless they neglect their teaching duties they haye no time for after-1noo- , V f -- -- -- 4 whole-hearte- . com-men- -- Four Orem Schools 550 Kids Will Dq nee , Monday Night . . . - ij I - re ther princiin the arrangements making pals include.
