Though he arrived in New York with only five cents in his pocket, he eventually became professor of electrome-chaniat Columbia University. He developed electrical miracles such as the Pupin coil for telephones, the short exposure time for photographs, and the exfluorescent screen for aminations. A limited background never binds the man who wants to break his chains. People suffer their chains of circumstance in many different ways. Some knuckle under to accidents, illness, financial loss, family trouble, neurotic fears, or an irresponsible temper; some grit their teeth and bear their chains until the bitter end. But sensible people break each bond as it comes, thus freeing themselves for happy and purposeful living. You can do this, too, by following these steps to freedom: 1. Faithfully observe the known rules in any given situation. To re health may require a gain yc rigid diet or a program of physical therapy, but the persistent patient wins. In business, the faithful of the known rules also gets results. "Suppose you were a salesman whose territory extended ob-serva- . nce from the Midwest to Los Angeles. You knew there were more than 700 outlets that ought to take your product within three .weeks, but at the end of this time you had opened less than 20 outlets. You stayed another, month and opened 80 more. Not a hopeful start! But you played the game according to the rules you refused to be chained. Well, the salesman who had that experience five years ago now supervises a dozen men in the area. Last year their sales were nearly million. Persistent use of the $1 rules generally breaks the chains! 2. Each day renew the mental image of the kind of person you want to become. Actually picture yourself in radiant health operating successfully in your chosen work, speaking comfortably and persuasively with your business acquaintances and friends. This picture will root itself in your unconscious life and go to work for you. It will file away your chains and make your dreams come true. 3. Substitute some new emotional satisfactions for the destructive ones you want to give up. It does little good just to cleanse your life of anger, jealousy, fear, and negativism if you do not fill the void with positive emotions. In breaking the shackles of circumstance and habit, it is also wise to give yourself to a higher Power. When you let God into your life, He .begins to work with you to break those chains. The power of your new affection destroys the old negative patterns and creates new ones that enable you to live fully! |
