Show DINNER HONORS GENE FULLMER WEDNESDAY Gene Fullmer, Utah's popular middleweight boxing champion was honored at a special luncheon, lunch-eon, Wednesday, March 27th in the Roof Garden of the Hotel Utah, sponsored by his employer, Kennecott Copper Corporation. Highlight of the event was the presentation of the official world's middleweight champion- ship belt to Gene by Nat Fleischer, Flei-scher, editor of '-Ring" and the boxing historian of his ganera-tion. ganera-tion. Mr. Fleischer was introduced intro-duced by Gov. George D. Clyde, who headed a guest list of 300 persons. A special presentation was made by L. F. Pett, general manager-of Utah Copper Division Divis-ion of Kennecott, on behalf of the company. Rex Layne, popular one-time contender for the heavyweight title, and fellow employee at the Bingham Canyon mine machine shop, was on hand to present Gene with the copper-plated, right-hand glove he used in winning win-ning the title from Sugar Ray Robinson last January. The presentation was made on behalf of the employees of the machine shop. The affair was attended by members of the press, radio, television tele-vision and community leaders from Bingham, Magna, West Jordan Jor-dan and Salt Lake Ciiy. Other guests included a cross section of business, education, religious and governmental leaders. Special Spec-ial guests were Gene's parents, his wife and his manager, Marv Jenson and his wife. Also pres- ent were several of Gene's friends and associates. |
