Show November 6, 2002, THE DAILY HERALD, (www.HariTheHerald.com), Wednesday, second start replacing Jay The Associated Press - With five under his DAVLE.Fla. snaps belt, third-string- Fiedler, who is expected to miss at least two more games with a broken right thumb. But the performNOTEBOOK ance was an improvement on Lucas' showing two weeks earlier in a loss to Buffalo. "Ray was playing well enough to give us a chance to win," Wannstedt said. "We obviously didn't help him." Lucas went with two interceptions, including one returned 89 yards for a touchdown by Darren Sharper. Many of his 198 yards passing came after Miami fell behind 24-The only other quarterback on the roster is journeyman Dave Dickenson, who has never played an NFL game. The Dolphins don't plan to sign another quarterback er Sage Rosenfels is the Miami Dolphins' most experienced healthy quarterback, and he may make his first NFL start by default Sunday against the archrival New York Jets. Ray Lucas is questionable for the game against his former team because he bruised his right shoulder during the second quarter of Monday night's 0 loss at Green Bay. He left the game and Rosenfels went in his first NFL appearance before Lucas returned and played the entire second half An MRI exam of Lucas' shoulder Tuesday showed no tears or broken bones, and it's uncertain whether hell be able to practice this week, coach 22-for-- 0. Dave Wannstedt said. "He was hurting pretty good this morning,'' Wannstedt said. Lucas again struggled in his field goal attempt on the final play of regulation in San Francisco's 23-2- 0 overtime victory over the Oakland Raiders last Sunday. 'He had a tough day at the office, but he's our kickerf Mariucci said. "He's got to know that" Cortez is grateful for the 49ers' confidence and still a bit flustered that he needed to ask for it again. After rebounding from a rocky rookie year by unexpectedly winning a training d rookie Jeff Chancamp battle with dler this summer, Cortez finally had some job security before Sunday's disaster. Now he's back on the tightrope and for the former XFL kicker who finally got his first NFL shot last season, it's nothing new. "Its always great when the head coach tells you that you're the guy, but I know I've got to perform," Cortez said. "You have to look over your shoulder, because Jeff Chandler is still here." Cortez redeemed himself by making a 8:41 into overtime to end it but credit for the victory belonged to Jeff Garcia and San Francisco's offense, which moved the ball exceptionally in the final minutes. - offensive lineman Jemmy McKinney has undergone a heart procedure to correct a narrowing of an artery. McKinney, 26, played Sunday in Detroit, but felt shortness of breath after flying home. The d McKinney checked himself into an emergency room. Tests Monday revealed some narrowing of an artery. He had an angioplasty procedure, which involves using a balloon to improve dilation, to clear up the condition. Doctors said the procedure was a success and he is in good condition. His prognosis is excellent, and he should be released from the hospital by the end of the week. - CORTEZ HAS BACKERS: Not many NFL kickers have been given as many second chances as Jose Cortez and he hopes he ; ; CARTER RETURNS: Saints cornerback Date Carter reported to practice Tuesday, one day after the NFL ended his suspension for violating its substance abuse policy. e Pro Bowl selection, joined Carter, a the Saints (6-2-) as they returned from a bye week. The team closed its practice to the media, and Saints spokesman Greg Bensel said Carter would not be available for comment Carter, who had to sit out the 2000 season for substance abuse, failed another test and was suspended indefinitely in July, only months after signing a seven-yea$28 million contract with the Saints. He played in the first three games this season, then tore cartilage in his left knee and had arthroscopic surgery. He returned to practice in but experienced pain in another part of the same knee. A medical exam found another tear in a different part of the cartilage, and he had more surgery on Oct 28. 27-ya- SURGERY FOR MCKINNEY: Dallas Cowboys er 24-1- wont need another. Coach Stmt Martucd says Cortez is still the 49ers' kicker, even after missing an easy and will go with Rosenfels if necessary, Wannstedt said. Tampa Bay Carolina Not so fast, Angels say Washington Honda Atlanta - The World Series champion ANAHEIM, Calif. Anaheim Angels aren't about to let anyone monkey around with their mascot especially when it comes to a movie. Larry Cano, an executive producer of the 1983 film "Silkwood," views the Rally Monkey as a perfect role model for kids and wants ttrmake a movie featurg ing the primate. Cano has filed both a trademark application for the term "Rally Monkey" and a script treatment with the Writer's Guild of America. There's only one problem. The Angels and major league baseball say they have prior rights to the name, and have already begun to enforce them against others' looking to make a buck from the monkey. The mere fact that somebody filed for trademark registration does not give them any special legal status," said Rick Schleslnger, an attorney for the Angels. "Our position is that 'Rally Monkey' is a protected trademark of the Angels and has been so since we first used it in the fall of 2000."
