"Outside of the first six or seven minutes, we played pretty good." Said Woodberry: "We didn't respect them like we should've and we got the wake-u- p call, mainly because our bench players came off and gave us that spark." BYU's early deficit resulted from matchup problems. Cleveland went with a smaller lineup that included Allen at power forward and Jared Jensen at center, and BYU climbed back in the game. It's a sword once wielded by BYU's Paul Walkenhorst and C.J. Ah You and now carried by Matt Ah You, forged in the mind of defensive coordinator Tom Longenecker and carried into battle on prep football fields on Friday nights. The Lone Peak defense has been sensational this year, allowing just 78 points in 11 games. Timpview has the same defensive numbers. Hardly a coincidence, since Longenecker and Timpview assistant Louis Wong drew up the basics of an attacking defense six years ago when they were both assistant coaches at Lone Peak. "Every year we start building with fundamentals," Lone Peak head coach Monte Morgan said. "Running to the football, tackall ling, pass coverage the things we try to do to keep other teams from getting a big play." Morgan and Longenecker rotate as many as 17 athletes into the game to keep the defense fresh and rested. "We have six defensive backs who play, and every week we play 'rock, paper, scissors' to decide who starts," Longenecker said. Talent flows through the Highland and Alpine areas .
