Be certain your rifle or shotgun is pointed in a safe direction at all times. The cardinal rule of hunting is never point at anything you don't intend to shoot. B Be sure of your target. Know for a certainty that no one is in your line of fire. If you have any doubt at all, pass up the shot. B If you are camping out, be sure your rifle or shotgun is unloaded and stored safely while in camp. Never load it again until the next morning. Assume responsibility for youngsters hunting with you. Utah law allows those 14 years and older to hunt with a rifle. While the majority of these youngsters are probably just as aware of gun safety as the adults, the excitement of having a deer in their sights for the first time may cause them to forget. Remind them of the rules. Give them the benefit of your experience and help them enjoy the sport safely. Fall's arrival means many Hill AFB people now eagerly anticipate the upcoming hunting seasons. That anticipation should also stir within each hunter's mind the precautions he must take to make the hunt this year safe for himself and for anyone within a rifle shot's distance of him. Each year hunters are killed or injured needlessly because someone was careless. This doesn't need to be. Attention to the basic rules of hunting safety will help you bag a buck and live to recount the story time and time again. The rules are simple and every hunter should be well aware of them. Still, here's a review of what to do before you head out: Ensure your firearm is in good working condition. It should be completely cleaned, checked for ease of operation and sighted in before heading out. Take the right clothing. Utah law requires a certain amount of blaze orange clothing be worn for many of the hunts. Check the hunting proclamation. Make sure the ammunition you use is right for your firearm.
