Thrse involved in the world of guided missiles know better than anyone else that everyone has to be able to react instantly and all equipment must be ready to go at a moment's notice. This is especially true in the world of the Strategic Air Command, and the only practical way to do this is through an program of constant drills for everyone and incessant equipment checks to ensure all systems are working. Thus it came about that people from F.E. Warren AFB, Wyo.. came to Hill AFB Sept. 12 to pick up a replacement practice missile. Warren had a problem with a leaking hydraulic line in a Peaceon-goin- v r g keeper emplacer that made the first stage of their practice missile unusable. To support SAC, Col. J.B. Meyers, the 1CBM Product Director, agreed to provide a replacement from the Strategic Missile Test Complex at Hill. F.E. Warren then sent a convoy of 18 people and 14 vehicles here to transport the three stages of a Peacekeeper missile , nearly '500 miles back to Wyoming. As of Wednesday, SAC and its F.E. Warren unit again have all the equipment they need to practice missile emplacement. Ground test missiles are used to train personnel to install and remove Peacekeeper missiles at operational strategic launch facilities. The test missile stages contain no explosive propellant and pose no danger to personnel; however, they do contain ( v tit K x Li, 1M1 -- rtn 1 I .71 H Open wide '" - Mr. Workers move the replacement practice missile onto its special trailer for shipment to F.E. Anything that large requires specially designed equipment to handle and transport it. The SAC contingent came to Hill equipped with Air Force photo by Ralph Leoe PK Type II transporter vehicles and emplacement handling equipment to perform the disassembly and removal of the Hill test missile. The SAC crew also took stages 2 and 3 from Hill's SMTC with them to F.E. Warren to install storage rings. Once done, the two stages will be returned to Hill for storage.
