Show ACTION LINEEXT. 77000 Civilians need gym time Would it be possible to provide a weight control program for civilian employees similar to what the Air Force members have where we could be given time to work out at the gym? A lot of us are really out of shape, and I'm sure the Air Force would benefit from providing a program that would help improve our health. Q A appreciate your interest in physical fit-- r ness and weight control. There are presently various fitness and weight control programs offered by our base facilities, but I am not at liberty to grant administrative leave to civilians for the purpose of participating in 1 health fitness programs. The comptroller general has made a determination that such action is not an appropriate use of administrative authority. Therefore, participation in such programs would have to be on your own time. Hours of operation at our base facilities should allow participation before or after work and during lunch breaks. Supervisors are encouraged to allow shift rearrangements permitting earlier or later start times or extending the daily work schedule, thus allowing an hour for lunch break. For specific information regarding available fitness programs, contact Capt. Lee Allen, health promotions office, Ext. 71215. Why the anthem before a movie? As a relatively new member of the Air Force, there is something I'm curious about. Why do they play the national anthem at the base theater before the movie starts? Since we are purchasing a service to view a movie and it's not a mandacommercially-mad- e kind of out of place to seems it tory formation, jfc 3f me. I The national anthem playing at the base si theater is an established Air Force policy. I'm sorry you feel it's inappropriate, but personally I'm proud to show patriotism at any function. understand that our sister services (Army and Navy) have discontinued this playingshowing of the national anthem at their theaters and I'm disappointed. Within the Air Force, and especially at Hill AFB, I want it to continue. I Still waiting for a job My husband has been on the Career Job Z Reservation waiting list for nine months and is still way down the list. We know of members who signed their CJR after returning from Saudi Arabia and they have already received a position. Why do they have priority over someone who has been on the list so much longer? Since the Department of Defense is scaling back the size of its services significantly, many of the programs the Air Force uses to have been select personnel for made more stringent. For example, the number of positions available in your husband's career field is limited and there are more airmen who want to continue in that field than can. Airmen are given priority preference based upon several quality indicators, among which are rank and performance ratings. Those with higher markings and rank are given the limited slots in the career field first. Those individuals who served in Saudi Arabia were given a second chance to apply again only because the Air Force wanted to make sure everyone ettgible had the chance to apply. These individuals had to meet the same selection criteria as your husband. The selection was not based' upon serving in Saudi Arabia. If further information is required, please call TSgt. John Humphrey of the 2849th Security Police Squadron for the interest he shows in maintaining securi- ty police vehicles. He puts forth great effort to see that his squadron's vehicles are maintained in an excellent condition. His great rapport with those of us at transportation maintenance makes it a pleasure to work with him. Thank you very much. appreciate your kind comments concerning SSgt. John Humphrey. He is indeed a true professional and dedicated to his job. He will be recognized by his commander at an appropriate forum. Thank you. thanks to Sgt. William Anderson of the 2849th Security Police Squadron, and to Gerald Clements and all those at the sign shop who helped make it possible to have a sign posted at the end of Adam's Circle for my child who is deaf. If it weren't for them, I'm not sure what would have been done. Again, I just wish to say thanks to all who helped make it possible. appreciate you taking the time to thank these individuals. They will be presented commendation letters in the appropriate forum by their commander. the base restaurant for the outstanding work they accomplished for the base fire department I would like to offer a kudos to on two occasions. We purchased two retirement cakes from them and they were outstanding, the most moist we have ever eaten. The icing decorations were done exactly as requested, and the price of the cakes was very reasonable. Cal Scott and his staff of employees are to be commended for a job well done. To everyone at the restaurant, thank you, and keep up the good work. The base restaurant prides itself on the products and customer service offered to patrons. Although the presentation of excellent customer service is its own reward, I and they appreciate hearing from the true silent majority satisfied customers. balance over the phone when you give them identifying information. Why can't they tell us what our balance is if we give them our Social Security number? Accounting and Finance tells me that you weren't alone in your frustrations, as everyone's pay statements were delayed because forms were not available. Finance has since received an ample supply of the forms and tell me they're confident this problem shouldn't happen again. I also understand your frustration about not getting your pay information over the phone, but Accounting" and Finance has a responsibility to protect you. Air Force policy not It has been long-standin- g 11 Tires to provide information from military records unless the provider (finance) is confident that information is given, if not directly to the member, at least with his her knowledge and consent (power of attorney presented). For your protection, pay amounts will not routinely be provided by phone. In the past, various individuals have attempted to gain access to a member's pay information in order to u?e this information against the member. For example, finance routinely receives calls from bill collectors, etc., posing as the member and providing identifying information in order to receive specific, information. I realize other financial institutions give information over the phone, but they have various ways to identify the caller. And, you can restrict access, change your account number or change your account to another institution if necessary to protect yourself. Our finance office cannot provide the same safeguards. Finance does realize, however, that there are exceptions to every rulepolicy. If you require information regarding your pay prior to receiving your statement, stop by the Military Pay Office. If you have an emergency, call them at Ext. 71851. Each situation will be handled on a basis. pay-relate- G.n. Dolt W. I would like to extend a special H.I! top s, LINE Moj. Sept. 27, 1991 d e case-by-cas- 'Phone tag' causes frustrations you make a phone call to the jf When 1881st SysCommunications-Compute- r tems Group and the number you are calling is busy, it automatically transfers you to another number. I feel this is a big waste of time for everybody because the person who answers the phone usually can't help you. I'd rather get a busy signal than be transferred to someone who can't help me. Could you look into this and see if there isn't a better way to do business? i understand your concern with "call warding" and am aware of problems with Voice Mail Box. A process action team was the established to look at problems including the one you've identified. An improved policy, based on the PAT team studies and recommendations, is in draft and will soon be in effect. Your specific problem presents somewhat of a dilemma to the 1881st. They've had many positive comments on "call forwarding," and believe the options to leave recorded messages or to contact someone else in the office are better than getting a busy signal. I do, however, recommend that the calls be forwarded to a knowledgeable alternate when the person you're trying to call is away from his or her desk. The 1881st people have been instructed in the proper use of these options and should be using good judgment in their application. If you consistently communicate with specific individuals within the 1881st, I suggest you tell them of your concerns and recommend they not forward their telephone calls to people who cannot help you when they are busy. I for-""- 1 Price steep for boat rental I dT wanted to take a boat for a week on a little vacation with the family and was mi advised by Morale, Welfare and Recreation Division officials that a aluminum boat with engine and trailer would cost $31 a day. That amounts to $217 a week, which seems a little steep for MWR. It certainly doesn't help my morale nor recreation because I can't afford to pay $217 a week for a rental boat. Why do they charge such an exorbitant amount? 16-fo- ot The fees charged by the equipment check-Jrout center must cover the cost of the equipment, the maintenance of the equipment, and the cost of doing business. All fees and charges are recommended by the Nonappropriated Fund Council and approved by the 2849th Air Base Group commander. If you can't afford a boat with a 25 horsepower motor, perhaps you could use a boat with a 9.9 or a 7.5 horsepower motor which would cost less. If you check the rental prices for a boat and motor at a marina, you will find the prices charged by MWR to be a bargain. X 16-fo- 14-fo- ot ot m |
