Due to numerous outbreaks of measles in recent years in the United States, the Center for Disease Control, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the Immunization Practices Advisory Committee have recommended that all individuals born in 1957 or after receive a second measles, MMR immunization. According to Maj. (Dr.) Michael P. Vaughn, U.S. Air Force Hospital, Hill, there are three reasons why the target years are 1957 and later: Nearly everyone born before that had measles and were therefore are immune to the disease. Q These diseases became relatively rare in the general population because of mass immunization programs; however, in recent years the diseases have reappeared because many young parents assume it is unnecessary to immunize their children. The CED and AAP recommend that immunization be done again at ages (at school entry); the ACIP recommends that this be done again in middle or junior high school entry. Phase II of the program runs through Oct. 4. Under the retraining program, the Air Force is looking for volunteers to retrain from overage skills into shortage skills. The only difference between the phases is individual letters are being sent to NCOs at risk for possible involuntary retraining if it becomes necessary in their career field, officials said. These people are encouraged to consider voluntary retraining into a skill of their choice. According to SSgt. Betsy Perry of the classification and retraining section of the military personnel office, the letters went out this week notifying affected Hill individuals that the second phase of the program has started. Approximately four people for each retraining-ou- t quota will be notified. Identification as "at risk" was based on staff sergeants with more than six but less than 16 years of active service, technical sergeants with more than nine but less than 16 years of active service and master sergeants with more than 12 but less than 18 years of active service. NCOs notified of being at risk will be ranked-ordereby grade, from most eligible to least eligible, based on total active federal military service date, date arrived station and date of rank. d, Air Force skills 45176, 452X3C, 454X2, 631X0, 645X1 and 811X0 skills have met the retraining-ou- t quotas and won't proceed to phase I or III.
