Our health is often the one thing we take most for granted. Yet health is the essential ingredient for achieving and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Health is, as Ralph Waldo Emerson called it, "the first wealth." We all recognize it is very difficult to achieve any other wealth without it. In Air Force Logistics Command, we are committed to providing a comprehensive health promotion program to improve the overall quality of life for all members of the work force. Our goal is to develop a d culture, one that values both mental and physical health. To meet this goal we are committed to providing a supportive environment to encourage and facilitate long-terhealthy lifestyles. We are making strides in achieving our ' goal. Most of our work force is aware of the impact a person's lifestyle can have on his or her health. But awareness is only the first step. A change in the lifestyle is the second. From health-oriente- the AFLC m Commander Jf - v n u1 1 AFLC has programs to help our people determine if lifestyle changes are necessary. Each installation has health promotion coordinators to provide health information on a variety of subjects and who assist in appraisals. At our prototype wellness center is entering its second year. The pilot program is designed to screen all base personnel and provide a health risk appraisal at no cost. This is being done in the workplace, and to date, more than 6,000 employees have been offered the opportunity. Each installation has wellness events and activities planned throughout May. I encourage everyone to take advantage and participate whenever possible and to continue to work toward a healthy lifestyle to take care of your "first wealth' health-ris- k Wright-Patterso- n, General Charles C.
