Show NEWS c May 10, 1991 r The first day of compressed work schedules will be May 19 for the majority of organizations slated to participate in an expanded test of two new work schedules. Affected employees will put in 60 hours of work in fewer days, resulting in extra days "off." A few organizations experiencing difficulties in implementing the schedules, due to the reduction in force or other concerns, will begin the test sometime after June 16. A small group of employees, who now "dread the thought of ever going back to the old way" have been on the new schedules since October, said Pat Lindsey, chief of the Small Business Office, where the compressed work schedule has been tested for more than six months. "The compressed work schedule is expected to improve the quality of life for employees and to posipre-empti- SDH any day shift between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m., providing it has the same starting and ending times each workday. Consideration should be given to employee requests for shifts based on car or van pools, child care requirements, education needs and the like. You should talk to your supervisor about w hich starting time would benefit you and the organization. Q How much leave will I be charged when I'm on the compressed work schedule if I use an- ve nual or leave? sick A Leave is charged based on the number of hours you are scheduled to work for the day you are taking leave. If your work schedule is for 10 hours and an entire day of leave is taken, you will be charged 10 hours. If you are scheduled for nine hours and you take a full day of leave, you will be charged nine hours. tively affect our ability to meet mission requirements," said Nancy Valenski, chief of the entitlements and benefits unit in Civilian Personnel. The Personnel Office compiled the following list of questions commonly asked about the new compressed work schedules. Q Can I choose to stay on my eight-hoshift? A If your organization has approval to participate in the compressed work schedule test, you have the option of going on the compressed work schedule or requesting a hardship exception to stay on the eight-hou- r shift. You should talk to your supervisor about your request. Q Why can't I select the compressed work schedule I want instead of the one assigned by my directorate? A If every employee at Hill AFB selected the particular compressed work schedule he or she wanted, the meeting of mission requirements could not be guaranteed. It would be difficult for supervisors to schedule properly to meet workload demands within budget and manning constraints. Each directorate selected the compressed work schedule which best suited the mission requirements for that organi- Q I If a holiday falls on my day off, when do get my holiday? A If your days off are Friday, Saturday and and the holiday falls on Friday, you will obSunday serve the holiday on Thursday. When your days off are Saturday, Sunday and Monday and the holiday falls on Monday, observe the holiday on Tuesday. The basic rule is: When the holiday falls on your first or second day off, observe the holiday on the day before. If the holiday falls on your third day off, observe the holiday the next workday. ur Q work the schedule and do not acwork on a holiday, do I have to use my tually leave to get nine hours of pay on the holiday? A The pay you receive when observing a holiday will be for the number of hours you are scheduled for that day. Your Time and Attendance sheet If I 5-- 49 will reflect nine hours if you would have worked nine hours. You will not be charged any leave to be paid for the full holiday. Q Has the base given any consideration to my child care arrangements? A If child care arrangements pose a hardship, for an exception to paryou may submit a request in CWS test. the ticipation Q Who decides what is a hardship ex- zation. Q Why can't I select the beginning and end- ing times for my shift regardless of whether I'm on the compressed work schedule or not? A Management has the option of establishing 9 HUhop Times ception? A its own requests and make determinations on a basis. Examples of possible exceptions may include child of elderly parent care, or car and van pools. Requests should be submitted through proper channels within your organization. Q What policy applies to car or van pools or those riding the Utah Transit Authority bus whose transportation schedules are disrupted because of compressed work schedules? A No automatic solutions for transportation conflicts have been handed down by the base. Each organization is retaining maximum power to work out problems over time. As far as bus schedules, UTA planning indicated the company is unable to forecast schedule and route changes until after the compressed work schedules are fully implemented. The final number of employees, buildings and organizations involved and routes affected will all have an impact. UTA will try to accommodate changes, but because of limited numbers of buses, major changes and added routes may not be possible. Employees who depend on the bus should contact UTA as soon as their schedules become known. Can I just try the CWS for a few weeks and get off if I don't like it? A The CWS is a test and requires an honest trial. Once the base chose to participate in testing the new schedule, we committed through at least April 1, 1992. Because of scheduling and administrative difficulties involved in implementing the test, employees are requested to remain on the chosen schedule for the duration of the test, and to keep changes to a minimum so that valid results will be achieved at the test's conclusion. Q Q Why can't employees on the automated Time and Attendance System system participate in a compressed work schedule? A Employees on the TASYS system will be work schedule if their able to choose a compressed directorate is participating once the programmming has been completed. When the TASYS was designed, all users were on a traditional eight-hou- r schedule. Now that air logistics centers are testing the compressed work schedule, the programmers have to modify the system to accommodate the 410 work schedule codes. This is being done and at San Antonio and Tinker ALCs. 5-4- Each participating organization will review case-by-ca-se 9 5HsaaM&n2ay WEEKEND DINING I I Be iiicjHCMvnw INN OVERNIGHT LODGING 394-94- w $C95 STRAWBERRT CRETE'S $450 $450 $425 Si on Mother A Carne Guisada Platter (Seasoned Steak cubes, with gravy rice, beans & 2 tortillas) S199 B Chile Verde Plate (Pork cubes in a mild gravy Rice, beans & 2 tortillas) SA99 C Mexican Steak A La Mexicana Free Plant For Mom 74 w Specialties Menu OMELET EGGS BENEDICT.
