Show MONDAY, JANUARY 10, 16 CLIFFORD MOTTOLA continued from page THE DAILY UTAH CHRONICLE 2000 continued from page 15 better shot Making his return to the Utes against Chicago State, Mottola put up 6 points in a game that was never really in jeopardy. It was three nights later that the Finn has impact of the on the Utes was really seen. The then-Nq Texas Longhcrns M. in the Jon Huntsman Center were for the first of nine Utah ESPN appearances. The Utes had dropped out of the top 25, and hadn't faced a racked opponent in a month. Mottola scored 32 points to go along with his u rebounds and two assists in the Utes 3 win. d Since returning, Mottola has 24.5 points in six games, nearly 10 more than any other Ute over the same o. 79-7- ayer-age- period. "He's very important to us," Althoff said. "Hanno can stretch the defense so far, he can post up, he can go outside, he really keeps our motion going." He can even get the notoriously Majcrus to gush. "Hanno's a hell of a player,"' Majerus said. "He's been an exemplary captain, nit-pic- think the other players look to him because he's very talented." However, Majerus will not hesitate to say what Mottola needs to do to round out his game. "He's got to rebound better for us to win," Majerus said. "He needs to be I tougher." Mottola said after the Utes' easy victory over SUU that he sometimes has trouble getting up for games he doesn't see as big games; and that yes, he wants to be a better rcbounder. Rebounding aside, Mottola's ticket to the NBA has pretty much been punched. He is likely to be Majerus' fourth lottery pick in four years. He is also likely to stand out for the rest of the season. 15 Force. The Falcons are 7 so far, and they aren't likely to get much better. Jarvis Croft is averaging almost 20 points per game, but that's because no one else is scoring. To say the Falcons lack height would be an understatement; they don't even have a center. Air Force might be sble to pick up a win over San Diego State, but it could easily be a conference season for the Falcons. The Aztecs, who open their conference season by hosting Utah tonight at 10 p.m. on ESPN, will share the Falcons' cellar space. San Diego State coach Steve Fisher may have won a national championship with Michigan, but he will struggle to win games in the MWC. Myron Epps leads the Aztecs with 13 points per game, but is the team's only consistent scorer. At 6 feet 6 inches, Epps will likely be guarded by Alex Jensen tonight, and the Aztecs don't have a second option. Colorado State will fall to sixth place. Don't let a 4 record fool you, the Sams aren't that good. The Rams are a decent shooting team, but not good enough to keep up with the guns from BYU and UNLV, and not big enough to run with Utah. Forward Cedric Goodwin will dominate smaller forwards in the league, but the Ram guard line isn't good enough defensively to shut down the perimeter against anyone. Not big enough to be big, and not quick enough to be quick, the Rams will drop most of their conference road games. BYU head coach Steve Cleveland is going to have a contender in Provo in a couple of years, just not this year. But BYU made enough of a showing in its 4-- ss 10-- ce Classes still available games to move up to the middle of the MWC pack. The Cougars are small Mekeli Wesley is their biggest starter but are a very accurate shooting team. They also seem to be playing defense, which much of the MWC is net. Like the Rams, BYU's 2 record is a bit misleading, but Wesley has become a much better player, averaging almost 19 points and six rebounds per game. Silester Rivers is shooting 58 percent from the floor and BYU will need him more in the conference season. The Marriott Center will be a dangerous place to play this year. Wyoming looked like a team at the beginning of the season, but the Cowboys will be lucky to hold on to No. 4 now. The Cowboys lost center Ugo Udezue for the season, which leaves them with no inside presence at all. At the beginning of the year, coach Steve McClain said he would take advantage of the altitude in Laramie to run other teams out of breath, and he has done a good job of it so far. Wyoming's leading scorer is guard Anthony Blakes, and the Cowboys are putting up more than 84 points per game. Of course, they need 2!! 84 because they are giving up 77. Wyoming is not the team it could have been, but Laramie will be dangerous for Utah. New Mexico is a team ESPN and ABC are banking on to be good, but the Lobos will struggle a bit this year. Lamont Long is playing as well as he did last season, with 17 per game, but without Kenny Thomas the Lobos lack a o guy. Tell me if you see a pattern among MWC teams. The Lobos lack size. Freshman R.T. Guinn is their big man at 6 feet 9 inches. Still, the Lobes are better than most of the conference, and the Utes" visit to the Pit is worthy of the n-- top-thr- ee go-t- it V IK Though being mugged on this piay. Tony Harvey has piayed well for Utah. national attention ABC has decided guard around, Head coach Bill Bayno has built his program slowly, and this could be the season ail his work pgys off. Utah will have a tough match against the physical Kambala, while the rest of the team's quickness will to give it. UNLV is the MWC sleeper. Kas- pars Kambala leads the league in rebounding and is one of the league's best forwards, and Mark Dickel's 8.5 assists and 13 points per game irlake him by far the best point also be dangerous. sib sr. that cover the esi diversity requirement in the Ethnic Studies Program: Get a great massage thi weekend for just $151 UTAH .111 OfCOLLEGE MASSAGE THERAPY tS S56C-00- 3 $ ES 2570-07- 0 Chicanao Exps Amer 5nd Exps Asian Am Exps 2580-00- 2 T MW 06:00-09:00- ? 12:55-01:45- S 09:oo-i2:45P- MW 04:00-05:45- TH Bik Pop Culture ES32$boas Ethnc Min Fam SANDY o5:oo-o8:ooP- MWF ?
