Mike Welch, Big Game Program Coordinator discussed herd conditions this winter, "Throughout the state, big game animals are beginning to move to traditional winter ranges. As they move down, their fat content should be good and they will likely make it through the winter in fine shape." Welch continued, "In most regions of the state, winter snows came gradually. That provided animals a chance to move down to lower elevations and avoid heavy snow accumulations." He concluded, "Despite the high snowfall along the Wasatch front, big game animals were in good condition and should through be alright if they get to lower elevations." Wildlife biologists are continuing to monitor winter range areas. mid-Janua- ry o. Lehi would be severely affected in several of the proposals as they would be tossed into a 4A region with American Fork, Pleasant Grove, Uintah and "Alpine" with the Pioneer school the smallest at 1020 students, the projected Cutoff for enrollment for 1996-97- . the 3A schools is 1149 and below. "Alpine," the new high school as yet unnamed, has a potential population of 1250 with AF and PG at 1400 and 1450, respectively. Even Uintah at 1320 would be larger than Lehi and they are 200 miles away. With the opening of the "Alpine" high school, Lehi will probably lose additional students and could end up in the low 900 range. According to Principal Russell Felt, "It's a matter of travel versus competitiveness; we would like to stay close to home to cut down travel, but we would have a hard time being competitive against our sister schools within the district because of our size." He added that an ideal league alignment would put Lehi in a 3A region with Ben Lomond, Ogden, Tooele, Bear River, Granite and Judge Memorial. "That way we could remain competitive and the travel would be along flat, freeways, not over mountain passes," he commented. In a second alignment, North Richfield, Wasatch, Sanpete, Union and Park City could be grouped with Lehi where the Pioneers would be the largest, but not by much if Alpine takes students away from Lehi. The final decision will not be made on this issue until after a March meeting. Mr. Felt has written to the UHSAA realignment committee requesting an audience to appeal his case. He has explained that the student count is not accurate. The realignment committee is made up of principals, district board members and representatives from the state board of education. $ 1 4 V Jw-,- . K tv j ,5Ss!;s:? '1 f ,..
