President Eleise Smith conducted the meeting and the Club Collect was read by Leah Hansen. Claire Malmstrom introduced the guest for the program, Robert Apache McLean from Parley's Canyon, who performed several American Indian dances. He has danced every summer for the past 20 years at Jackson Hole in the Teton National Park area and is a member of the Western Intertribal group. Apache once danced for the ambassador from Japan, who gave him wings from an eagle, which he uses for his eagle dance. He performs for Boy Scout groups and powwows and well as many church groups. For his final number, illuminated only by a spotlight, he performed The Lord's Prayer in sign language. Claire Malmstrom and LuAnn Pope served refreshments to 19 members. The next club meeting will be held on March 14 at the home of Lois Evans. It would be typical, I suppose, of a jeweler, to write about Amethyst in the month of February. It is, after all, the "birthstone" for February. But there's so many things besides amethyst to write about that I hope you'll forgive me this February for dwelling on them, instead. For the record, Amethyst itself is the transparent purple variety of crys talline quartz. It is beautiful and pop ular, and it does have a fascinating legend. It also has a huge amount of brothers and sisters, much less wel- lknown, but enchanting and worthy of acquaintance in themselves. Some of these unusual relatives are not transparent (like a clear pane of glass), but what we call translucent (like a sheer window curtain). The translucency gives a magical quality to light as it passes through, and sometimes you get a fleeting glimpse of an autonomy of sorts (we call it or botryoidal, structure if grape-likit's circular). Light folds and fluffs as it passes through giving a softness to the appearance of these gemstones despite their stark mineralogical nature. The name given to this type of or quartz is chalcedony gem silica (since quartz is made of silica). It comes in many colors as a translucent gem including white, pink, pur ple, light violet, luscious green and beautiful blue. It can also be easily dyed so you need to beware. But perhaps the best attributes of chalcedony are its popularity with contemporary jewelry designers, the unusual shapes into which it is cut (tongues, bullets, etc.), and the fact that it is very inexpensive. Next time you're in the neighborhood, stop by and well show you how designers are incorporating chalcedony into beautiful, contemporary gold and silver jew elry. And next month well talk about some other unusual quartzes great for men's jewelry. r U 8 JEWELERS Sierra Center 1344 So. 800 E., Suite Orem (S.E. of Univ. Mall) 226-60- MAKEOVER.
