McKay Events Center, located on the Utah Valley State Campus (UVSC) wasbe officially introduced to the public at a Thursday, Feb. 1, open house "The event center should provide the county with a variety of quality events that Utah County has previously not been able to host," said Brent Roberts, McKay Events Center director. Events held in the center are as varied as sports, concerts, trade shows, circuses, rodeos and other. Over 100 events are expected during the first year, with the recent keynote address of former first lady Barbara Bush, the first, followed by the Creedence Clearwater Revival concert and a Wolverine Lake vs. Salt Community College basketball game. "The multi-us- e facility was planned and built with the community in mind," said Roberts. "The ability we have to do a variety of events, we feel, will enhance the cultural opportunity for the community." The facility, first proposed in 0 June of 1990, was originally planned as a physical education center for the college. It was expanded into a community area when the need for a medium sized area or performance venue in the county was shown. Existing spaces were limited to local high schools that seat less than 3,000 and Young Brigham University's Marriot Center that seats 22,000. It is difficult to obtain this for community purposes because it's owned by a private university. In 1991, Governor Norman Bangerter urged Utah County residents to support a proposed $7.7 million bond to fund the special events center. When the Utah County Commission asked for the bond vote, it passed by more than a 1 margin. In response to a request from an n dollar anonymous donor, in Sept. of 1995, the center was named after the ninth prophet of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-da- y Saints. In addition to being president of the church, McKay served as both commissioner of the LDS Church Education system and as president of Weber 2-- multi-millio- books, the living expenses, the it was Weber Academy. Roberts said the events center should provide Utah county residents with a place to hold a variety of quality events as well as serve as home for the UVSC Wolverines basketball team. Using the same kind of retractable risers as the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, the center seats up to 8,500 people. The four permanent basketball courts will be used by physical education classes. The professional removable court will be strictly for games. The facility e kitchen and dining has a area for the culinary arts program, which will be a restaurant. This facility has its caterer and will be own open to the public for lunch about four days a week, a few hours each day. The four concession stands, handled by UVSC food services, will help raise money for the operation of the center.
