By BRIAN BRENKERHOFF Recent snowstorms have created extremely hazardous conditions for backcountry travelers, as avalanche potential continues to rise. After temporarily closing many of our local canyons and catching individuals in their paths, snow slides have become headline news across the state. This is the first part of a two part series, regarding avalanche safety and rescue. Your best strategy to survive an avalanche is to avoid one. This often means to stay out of the backcountry, during times of extreme avalanche conditions. Should you decide to enter the backcountry under these conditions, it is recommended to avoid hazardous situations, which could easily end your life. Bruce Tremper, Director of the Utah Avalanche Forecast Center, reports that 99 percent of avalanche victims have had someone in their party trigger the avalanche they encountered. The following suggestions are provided to help avoid disasters from occurring to someone in your party: Before Call before leaving heading out to the backcountry, call the Avalanche Forecast Center Recorded information at is updated regularly to provide some of the best avalanche conditions in the Weather conditions are provided with avalanche safety tips and reports of known slide areas.
