ISSUE: bag you a great I Annexation. Tom Anderson will work to prevent neighboring counties from a political land grab. Under Tom Anderson's leadership neighboring counties won't be able to annex Utah County land, thereby insuringlocal control. He will prevent urban sprawl by requiring new subdivisions be incorporated into existing or new cities. Let us meal! In March, as I considered running for County Commissioner, I was advised by many to switch to the Republican Party. I was assured that if I did, I might win the Primary nomination, then I could run without opposition in November. That sounded simple enough, but I could not do this. One hundred and twenty years ago, Brigham Young sent my Danish ancestors to settle Mantua. Because President Young valued a y political system, he also g assigned them to be Democrats. These were farmers, doctors, judges, ecclesiastics, and by any national standard, conservatives. So am I. Alpine voters know that I am the most strongly committed of the city council to tax reduction and balanced budgets. Many citizensdisagree with me on specific issues, but these always know who I am and where I stand. Politics is a sick business on the national level. The Democrats-Thom- as Jefferson's Lincoln's party-a- re all responsible for the mess partyand the Republicans-Abraha- m in Washington. It is tempting to give up on mainstream party politics entirely, or to run with the extremists and opportunists. But I choose to remain true to my heritage, stay the course, and believe that a two party system brings out the best in Utah County. Apparently my opponent was given similar advice about running Republican. He has stated in each of our public debates that he has never before run for office. If he means that he has never before run as a Republican, then he is telling the truth. But Mr. Grover needs to make that clear, since he did run for County Commissioner two years ago, against the Republican Party and against the Republican County Commissioner Gary Herbert . He lost. This year it seems, Mr. Grover has accepted the temptation offered to me: to win with the help of an arbitrary label and have no real race after the primary. Remarkably, Mr. Grover doesn't even live in the district, Seat A, that he seeks to represent. When you cast your vote for County Commissioner, think carefully about the party issue. You will realize that, in this race, it simply doesn't matter. If I had succumbed to the same "easy-win- " enticements as my opponent, I would be the same person with a different party label, but less integrity. Once you realize the party labels mean little in this race, you can think carefully about the candidates themselves. Who, really is the best representative for you, your party, your county? Look for experience, qualifications, service and true representation for you and your community. I will not let our county become a dumping ground for Salt Lake County or its cities. 03P ISSUE: Political Cooperation.
