With Arlene Keate as the first president, a group of women, some of whom returned to Lehi to live with their parents, formed a club 50 years ago this month; the club remains active today and recently celebrated their golden anniversary with a special opening social. The club started in 1944 as the Junior Athenian Club, an offshoot of the Athenian Club, an organization of the Federated Women's Clubs. The folio wingyear, the group renamed itself the Olympian Club. In the first two years of the club's existence, 42 women participated. Now, 50 years later, four of those 42 are still active club members. These include Lois Evans, LaVee Kearney, Mary Peterson and Josephine Chatfield. Since "Olympian'means "to seek higher things," members of the group began to look past their own needs and consider how they could help others. In 1951, for example, the club donated 24 articles to the nursery in the Lehi Hospital in recognition of "the good care they and their babies received at the hospital." They also contributed to the hospital in another way as the 28 mothers gave birth to 43 babies in the six years since the club's founding. From 1945 to 1979, the Olympian Club sponsored a Spring Tea for the senior girls at Lehi High School and their mothers. They also sponsored several young women as they participated in the Miss Lehi pageant. Participating with other Lehi clubs, the Olympians were instru- - Herriman and Ethel Sears Hintze. The group has also collected funds for donations to the La Feria Fire Fund, Lehi Library and Sego Lily library, scholarships and grants, and twice for providing Christmas items for needy families.
