Show Citizen, Press, Review - Wed., Oct. 19, 1994 AF gives polished performance in 'Pinafore' By BARBARA CHRISTIANSEN rise in the naval service. Both voic- It's a good thing I don't get seasick. In the last few weeks, north Utah County groupshave produced two musicals based on seafaring adventures. The latest presentation "H.M.S. Pinafore" - is the current offering of the American Fork Arts Council. The Gilbert and Sullivan operetta differs greatly in form from the previous "South Pacific," but not in entertainment value. I could have been a little reluc- tant to see an operetta, but previ- ous experience showed me they can be both understandable and interesting. "H.M.S. Pinafore" proved both of those. A spoof of the British Navy and turn of the century class system, the play centers around the Pinafore's captain Joseph Corcoran, his daughter Josephine, and her suitors seam an Rafe Rackstra w and Sir Joseph Porter K.C.B. Neil Whitaker ably portrayed the captain, with just the right inflections and body language to demonstrate the demeanor of the "upper crust." His facial expressions were alone worth the price of admission. Nicole Wride was his daughter, aptly displaying the typical British style of controlled emotions, while running the gamut of suitors and reactions to them. Perhaps the most outstanding performances were by Cathy Jolley disconcerting. I especially enjoyed the musical repartee and asides to the audience ofJosephine and Rafe (Rod Sheets). "H.M.S. Pinafore," complete with its clever satire and witty lyrics, continues Friday, Saturday and Monday at 7:30 p.m. at American Fork Junior High School. Tickets are $4 for adults; $3 for students, seniors and children; and $15 for families. They are available at the door or at the American Fork Fitness Center, 454 N. Center St. Better hurry. His operatic repertoire includes more than 600 performances ofover 70 major roles. He has shared the stage with the world's greatest singers, including Joan Sutherland, Kiri TeKanawa, and Placido Domingo, performing regularly with companies such as the Chicago Lyric, San Francisco, Sante Fe, Dallas, St Louis, Kennedy Center and San Diego Operas. He is a professor of music at Utah State University and an accomplished pianist and oboist. Additional durance provided a perfect background for the lyrics. She fully deserved her own curtain call. Supporting cast members Mary Jane Helms (Cousin Hebe), Keith Christeson (Dick Deadeye), Michael Towers (the boats wain), the ship's crew, and the entire group of "sisters, cousins and aunts" rounded out the characterization and depth of the performance. However, the appearance of the "sisters, cousins and aunts" of Sir Page 9 Michael Ballam to perform in Nov. 4 concert Joseph at one moment, followed shortly by the same individuals performing as the chorus was at first es were clear and enunciation perfect so that the audience could get the full message. Staging at American Fork Junior High School often presents a problem with lighting, as the perimeters are not sufficiently covered. A couple of times during the evening, performers found themselves shining, but in the shadows. For novice opera goers, a synopsis of the action in the printed program would have allayed fears of not being able to follow the action. But as the evening's performance brought out, it wasn't necessary. The presentation began with a piano overture, which initially seemed abitunderstated, like much of British humor.
