If the spikes fall out, ants must retrieve the spike, 'It and start driving again. The Bpike must be driven all the way, no d jobs will do. Dale has worked long and hard for Union Pacific. He's come a long way from his days as a spiker. He is now the Western Regional Production Engineer for U.P., responsible for all construction work including industry and tracks. But recalling those first day s as a railroad spiker he said, "If Memorial Day hadn't come on Wednesday, Fd never have made it through that first week." He was made 1951, afterhavirigbeen born in a railroad house in Lofgren, Utah. And, even though the railroad has been good to him and his family, he's discouraged his sons. "There's too much traveling away from home." Dale's record that went into the Guiness Book of World Records was set seven years ago when he won in 25 seconds. Spiking is a family sport. His brother Araldo, a year older than to his Dale, came in second brother. There are 11 in his railroading family. He and his brother have stayed with Union Pacific through the years. Most people hold onto a variety of myths and fears that strongly affect their view of the developmentally disabled. Some of the most common myths that color everyday thinking are: "Most mentally retarded people are in hospitals and institutions, or should be." "The retarded can never work and be productive." "They are usually unpredictable, violent and dangerous." "Mental retardation runs in families." The reality is that the vast majority of developmentally disabled people are productive and functioning at home and in jobs. Some require sheltered training, employment and living arrangements, but only a small minority are actually in stitutionalized. The causes of developmental disability are seldom cut and dried, and the presence in one family member says nothing about the intelligence or genetic makeup of the rest of the family. If some of these concerns touch your life, the best course of action is to seek out education and counseling through some of the that serve the organizations . developmentally disabled population.
