Lehi and Richfield, the two top ranked teams in the state, will tourfurnish the finale of the ney's first day's fare. Because Lehi was derailed by Wasatch in the first round of the the Region Nine tournament, Pioneers qualified as the third place team, and won the disputable right to face the number one ranked team from Region Ten, Richfield. tournament was supposed The to have been played in Cedar City, but when the gymnasium didn't meet the state fire code, USHAA had to scrounge around for another location. and tournaments So, the will share the spacious confines of the Marriott Center. Winners will continue to play there. Losers will play in an area high school, probably Mountain View or Springville. The Region Nine Tournament proved that anything can happen in a game of basketball. Lehi had beaten Wasatch in two successive matchups, but the third contest had the Pioneers losing a battle to the Wasps, Knowing they were in for tough contest, the Pioneers looked tense and tentative, while the fired up Wasps played confident, and put up one of the toughest defenses Lehi has faced all year. Coach Bill Farr put a chip off the old block, his son, on Darren Jones and young Farr dogged the Pioneer's top scorer throughout the game. Jones had a hard time seeing the ball, let alone getting his hands 2-- A 2-- A 2-- A A one-poi- nt 49-4- on it. Lehi didn't roll over and play dead. They played tough defensive basketball too, and the game was in doubt until the final whistle blew. Lehi led 10-- 7 at the end of the first quarter and Calton scored first after the second quarter started. Nathan Hadfield came into his own in the next few minutes as he stole the ball, tossed it to Chris Price who sunk a beauty from the corner. Nate scored a layup off a press by the Wasps to give Lehi a 7 lead. That looked good, but Jones was whistled for his third foul and that was bad as Coach Robinson had to senior. bench his prolific-scorin- g Kam Christensen, the Wasp's great sophomore, was hitting almost every time he got the ball, but Hadfield stole the ball and scored again. Christensen and Farr scored but Lehi took a 2 lead at half-timfull-cou- rt 26-1- 29-2- e. ' The Wasps' Coach Farr must have seen something or said something to his . players during the halftime break because when third quarter action started, it was all Wasatch, they scored off the inbounds pass, but the Pioneers' Jones swished a jumper from the key and from then on it was tough pickin's for the Pioneers. Someone put a lid on the basket as Calton and Redmond had three tries from underneath and the ball just wouldn't go in. Pretty soon Lehi's lead had been cut to three points and again Lehi's tall and talented twin towers couldn't get the lid off the basket as three more attempts to score from underneath failed. Wasatch scored on the rebound and went ahead after a Pioneer turnover. Lehi's offense was mired in No-Gand the Wasps did nothing wrong. The Wasps guard, Cary Holmes, put the Wasps up by three points. Jones hit from outside and Lehi inched back as the Wasps missed and Bob Peck scored from underneath on a nice feed from Chris Price. Farr nipped in a nice one from outside for Wasatch but Scott Price, the other half of the brother duo, netted a beauty from the corner to lead at give Lehi a narrow the end of third quarter action. Matt Calton went to the line in the early moments of the final canto, hit both, and again Lehi had a three-poimargin. The heavy contest continued with Lehi playing slow-dowoffense went ahead Lehi kept the lead, but Wasatch narrowed the gap as Cary Holmes kept the Wasps in the game with his outside shooting. Chris Price hit from the key and 9 lead. After a Lehi kept a Wasatch timeout with 3:40 to go in the game, things really got tense. " .t The score was tied at again and Jones playing with four at fouls, broke the tie by hitting both tries from the charity stripe. With :45 to go, Jones fouled out and Christensen hit the front end of a Bob Peck gave Lehi a 6 lead by scoring from the line, but Cary Holmes's layup counted situation and in a pressure-packe- d and after a Lehi timeout, hit his free throw to put Wasatch ahead Lehi called timeout with :12 seconds to go, but the Wasps defense kept the Pioneers from scoring on Scott Price's last second attempt from the corner. The loss relegated Lehi to the consolation bracket of the tournament and the Pioneers realized there was no tomorrow, state tournament wise, if they lost another game. 31-2- 8, o, fine-shooti- one-poi- nt nt n 41-3- 6. 43-3- " 43-4- 3, -' 45-4- 5, e. 48-4- 49-4- UdqU i Pioneer-Unio- n Darren Jones came roaring back in the Thursday night's game with Union, scored 19 points, and led the Pioneers to a 7 victory. They led throughout the game as the Pioneers played pure team basketball. Three players, Jones, Calton and Hadfield all scoring in 4 and 11 double figures, respectively. Lehi played good defense, got their offense uncorked, and continued their winning ways after getting that temporary derailment at the hands of the Wasps. 68-5- 19-1- le Friday's game with Grantsville was definitely not a shoo-iAll the teams in Region Nine improved greatly over the season's wars, and the Cowboys came to play in this last-ditc-h effort for a state tournament beth. Again, it was a team effort as Lehi battled to the 1 win. The victory gave the Pioneers that coveted tournament berth. Darren Jones, Scott Price; Matt Calton and Chris Price, hit in double figures for Lehi, 19, 14, 12 and 11, to give the Pioneers a very balanced scoring attack. Grantsville outscored Lehi in the first quarter, but Lehi bounced back in the second and third periods and held their own in the final quarter's action to seal the victory. Coach Robinson isn't too concerned about the fact that Lehi must play Region Ten's runner-up- , Richfield, the first night of the tournament. He figures his Pioneers can beat any team there, no matter which night they play, and one thing is certain, the Pioneers learned not to take anybody too lightly, or too seriously. n. khtf 64-5- $ f i S lVATaVir GOLDEN MARK steel belted tire. top quality Ask about our 50,000 mile Extended Service Agreement. A good turnout of Lehi fans could give the Pioneers that "sixth man" advantage, and now that the tournament is being held at the Marriott Center, 12, instead of 250 miles away, there is no reason not to be there so Lehi can win the Wear purple and white, bring some throat lozenges, a little extra change for the hot dog stand, and don't be too bashful to yell a lot.
