Show Free Press - Thursday, April Judo Tourney April 16 Estes Bushido Jitsu Kan, a local Ju Jitsu Club, is hosting a Judo tournament april 16. Weigh ins will begin at 9 a.m. and the matches will start at 10 a.m. There will be a Ju Jitsu demonstration at noon. The event will include Judoka from Lehi, Price, West Valley and Salt Lake City. The majority will be juniors, however there will be some senior matches. The local club was started in October of 1982 and this will be their first tournament. This club was started by Arthur J. Estes, San Dan (master Blackbest third degree) and his won, Dennis J. Estes. Arthur also has the Price club. Art has been teaching since 1959 and holds Black Belt ranks in both Judo and Ju Jitsu. The club is nationally recognized in both Judo and Ju Jitsu by the American Judo and Ju Jitsu Federation. 7, 1983 - Page 11 News About YOU! The basic principle of this art is to avoid or give way before an opponent's superior weight and strength in order to overcome him by using his weight and strength to his disadvantage. The older term, Jujitsu, or "gentle art," gave way in the Meisi era to the word Judo, or "gentle way," which stressed the ethical and philosophical concept of "do" or a "way" in harmony with natural law. Art and Dennis have just returned from the American Judo and JuJitsu Federation National Convention where they particpated in two days of classes and training. While at the convention Art received an ovation for his return to the federation and his new club. Dennis says that although they have about 30 students in a combination of all classes, there are still openings available for anyone who is in5 or terested. They can call 9 for more information. There will be free admission to any who are interested in watching. 30 50 768-416- -- Lakers win Bantam League nearly five months of the Lehi Bantam League came to a close a couple of basketball, -- ilk LJNHr.v'v It . weeks ago. However, the winner of the league was not determined until a playoff was held between the Lakers and the Celtics, and out of the dust and fury of that playoff the Lakers emerged victorious and took home first place honors. Coached by Ron Peck and Julian Mercer, the Lakers had only three losses for the season which was surprising considering they were perhaps the smallest team in the league, but their smallness was offset with exceptional speed and quickness. Wrapping up their Bantam basketball careers with impressive play were Jeff Mercer, Scott Peck, Eric Price and Bobby Peck. Jeff Mercer and Scott Peck were picked t BASKETBALL WINNERS.. .The Lakers emerged as First Place winners in the Bantam Basketball League, which has just completed their season's play. An honor banquet was held last week and each team member received a trophy. Team members include Bobby Peck, Scott Peck, Jeff Mercer and BANTAM ' ' Robert Hardy, front 1 to r. At a banquet held last Thursday evening for the Lakers, Steve Peterson from the National Guard was present to award each boy on the Lakers team a tropRy for taking first place. The Celtics coached by Ralph Price and Shirl Morril took second place and the Bulls coached by Ken Greenwood and Ed Hampton won third. As usual, the Bantam program is sponsored by the Utah National Guard, and the games are played in the Lehi Armory. This year, the program was directed by Marlin Peterson with help from many members of the Guard and people from the community. Computea-cal- Special Olympics draw Alpine students - state or out of state to play on the All l International 375-382- 2 Some 80 students from the Alpine School District participated in the 1983 indoor games of the Utah Special Olympics held in Salt Lake City this past week. The youngsters came home from the ;two-da- y event with several trophies ;and numerous ribbons which were ;won in competitive events such as and basketball, gymnastics, swimming. ! The activities were held at the University of Utah and all of the handicapped students stayed with host families from Salt Lake during their stay for the Olympics. The largest contingency of students from the Alpine School District was from the Peterson for School the miltiply handicapped which sent 50 students to the competition. Leila Ogden directed the program for the school with assistance from several staff members and volunteers. ; 'The students had a marvelous time," said Ogden, "and did well in a variety of events. Our junior basketball team took second place, our junior relay team won a first in swimming; we received numerous blue ribbons in floor exercises and bowling, and one of our girls won first place in her age group's bowling competition." Under the direction of Julie Landon and Gail Potter, students from the 3rd through the 6th grades participated in basketball and gymnastics. The basketball team took 1st place in the junior division.
