A: Most penguins live in or near the Antarctic. But there are also penguins in the Galapagos Islands, New Zealand, Australia, and South Africa. Q: Where do penguins get fresh water to drink? A: Penguins don't need fresh water at all! Sometimes they eat snow, but most of the time they just drink water from the ocean. They can do this because they have very large salt glands right above their nostrils. """" I wJL Free Press - Thursday, AprU7, 1983 Page 10 These glands remove extra salt from their blood. Now we suspect these claims may have a plausible physiological explanation. n fact that It is a during strenuous exercise such as a four-mil- e run, your temperature will rise to 102 degrees or higher, the equivalent of a pretty good fever, plus the fact that your temperature will stay up for awhile after you work out What is the connection? When you have an invading illness, the white cells in the blood attack the foreign organisms and release a substance called endogenous pyrogen, a protein that causes the brain to raise the body's temperature. The higher temperature creates a hostile environment for the invaders so that they cannot continue to multiply and harm your for body. Microorganisms, example, require iron to grow, and this is consequently lowered by the pyrogen. Add an increased number of white cells and antibodies in the blood to do battle in your behalf, and you can understand the invaders' predicament. They die. Incidentally, the best advice for a feverish exerciser is to lie back and enjoy the warmth.
