Pleasant 8-- 9 An parents number of extraordinary are convinced that their are extraordinarily brilliant - and sometimes this creates difficulties. An example of this is the mother and father who wanted their son in a special school class for gifted and talented children. The parents insisted that their son should be admitted to the special program, despite the fact that results of tests he took showed that other students scored several higher. No question about it, the boy is bright. But despite his intelligence, something was missing. The kid simply wasn't performing as well as he might. He simply didn't have the motivation that other students displayed. The class for gifted and talented students requires effort as well as nimble-wittednes- Grove In many cases it is wise for sort that convinces a child that he or she is brilliant. In too many cases, a youngster will sit back and loaf when he has been told repeatedly by adoring parents that his intelligence is superior to that of the others in his calss. Face it, school is work and work requires discipline. Another thing: Schools are going to become tougher and tougher. They are requiring much more of students. Not only that, this is the year that high school students must meet certain competency standards for graduation. All this means that being brilliant is not enough. It means that students are going to have to produce. In fact, colleges will be telling the students who have taken the required classes that they are cleared for entry - even if they didn't make straight "A's." And the colleges will be telling the brainy kids who didn't bother to take them: "See you when you do." 1981.
