Pioneer quarterback Wade Cardon rushed for two of Lehi's three TD's and threw for the third on a 48 yarder to Dave Nattress. Cardon was 9 for 13 for 183 yards with only one interception. The Pioneers kicked off to start the game and Bear River took over on their own 29. The Pioneer defensive line of Hamby, Geyerman, Fackrell, Nelson and Thayne showed the Bears offense they meant business by holding the Bears to a minus 10 yards on their first series. The Pioneers got the ball on their 34 yard line and started to move only to have the first of a number of penalties stall their drive. Neither team could put together a scoring drive the first quarter and both teams exchanged punts twice in the ' ' I "t , opening quarter. With six minutes left in the half, Lehi took the ball on the 40 yard line where Mike Bonds exploded out of the backfield for runs of 7 and 21 yards bringing the ball down to the 12 yard line. There Bonds and Mark Jones took turns carrying the ball until they reached the two yard line. Now Lehi's offense got tough and allowed Cardon to tip toe in from the 2 for the Pioneers' first score. The PAT was with two missed which made it minutes left in the first half. The bears came out throwing for a score before the half, but Troy Peterson intercepted a pass to give the Pioneers the ball on the Bear 46 line. After two running plays, Cardon hit Nattress on a 44 yard scoring toss. A try for two failed and the Pioneers had a 12-- lead, with both TD's coming in the last two minutes of the second quarter. Lehi's Mike Bonds took the second half kickoff, bounced off a tackier and then raced 80 yards for an apparent TD only to have it called back on a clipping call. The safety; Pioneers lost three scoring opportunities during the game due to penalties. After exchanging punts, Bear River found themselves deep in their own territory with Lehi's defense breathing down their necks. In an attempted screen pass, Lehi's Mark Jones, Mike Hamby and John Geyerman smothered the receiver in the end zone for a safety making the score 14-- as the third quarter ended.
