Show CRISPY TIMES - JANUARY 1994 . 3 Want to Get Radio Active? When we first moved to Castle Valley, we did the same thing that some of you must have done. Plugged About Our Castle Valley Players . . . . Profiling our Castle Valley Players in order of age, Dashiel and Katrina are in the third grade at Red Rock in the TV and spun the dial. The screen remained one big snowstorm. Farewell, Ted Koppel. At least there’s the radio, I thought. The house came equipped with one of those monstrous aluminium antennas, which I swiveled around in different directions while Jil fiddled with the dial inside, searching for intelligent life on the airwaves. We honed in on two stations. One, KUER, was more than I had bargained for: Elementary. Dashiel loves bike riding, ice-skating, drawing, and skiing. He wants to be a singer and live in the mountains when he grows up. Katrina's favorites are muleback riding, reading thrillers, art, parrots, and piano. When she grows up she wants to be a boat woman, an artist, or an actress. Both Heather and Corryn are in the fourth grade at HMK. Heather’s loves are ice-skating, traveling in airplanes, bikes, and swimming. She wants to be a singer, actress, or gymnast when she grows up. Corryn loves cats, swimming, reading, downhill biking, and wishes she had a rat. She too wants to be an actress, Dvorack, Beethoven, Wagner. It filled our days with operatic drama and dark fury, hard music to listen to on a summer’s day. The only other altemative was in the direction of Grand Junction, 92.3 KJOY, a nonstop onslaught of Barry Manilow and John Denver melodies. We had our choice. It was either the Black Forest or the Dentist Office. All I wanted was a radio station that reflected the area in which we were living. Well last year we got it. KZMU, 98.7, Moab Public Radio. Its patchwork programming reflects the diverse people who live here. Native American chants, Redneck Rock, New Age future ballerina, or archaeologist. Livi, in the 6th grade, wants to be an ape-ologist or first grade teacher, wants to go to Africa, and loves playing with her animals, drawing, swimming, and reading, SLEEPING UGLYand THE MULE REVIEWwill go on stage Saturday, January 29th, 11 a.m., at the LDS Branch House. ADMISSION IS FREE. Please come and support our young actors. This is theirfirst public appearance. These plays have been a joy to do. The untapped talent of these children is remarkable. I hope to do many more productions, expanding the Castle Valley Players to include more kids and young adults in the valley. They need your applause to fuel their enthusiasm. —Kaaron Jorgen Elevator, Seattle Grunge, Folk, Bluegrass, local news and announce- POA Brainstorming Workshop ments, a Children’s Hour, even a Ann Benge, POA chair, has scheduled a workshop for Wednesday, February l6, immediately following a short Town Council meeting at 7:15 p.m. The workshop will take from 50 to 60 minutes ONLY (from 7:30-8:30). This meeting will NOT be at the fire station but at the LDS Branch house instead. weekly Trading Post where people can sell off their unwanted Christmas presents. The reception cackles with static, but at least we can listen to it. Many here in Castle Valley can’t even do that. l brashly phoned the station one day to volunteer my services in any endeavor that would bring cleaner reception to Castle Valley. Alan ’1 ‘ Robinson, the station manager, called me the other night, asking for help in putting together a federal grant proposal for six translators. These transla— tors will not only bring quartz-clear reception to us in Castle Valley, but will extend the KZMU broadcast range from Green River to Bluff. As we are in the very beginning stages of prepar— ing this PTFP grant—at this point we don’t even know what PTFP stands for—it will take a fair bit of work. Is there anybody in Castle Valley that would like to help on this project? Deadline is March 3 lst.
