Show 178-TON STEAM GENERATOR PLACED ON FOUNDATION AT UTAH COPPER DIVISION POWER STATION A new 75,000 kilowatt eteam generator has been placed on its foundation as part of a $16,000,000 expansion project at the Central Power Station of the Utah Copper Division. Installation of the 1 78-ton unit required one of the largest cribbing operations in local building history. A total of 429 pieces of 12 by 12-inch 12-inch timbers ranging in length from four to 24 feet, plus 875 . railroad ties were required to raise the generator gen-erator 30 feet to the main floor of the power plant. It took four 50-ton 50-ton hydraulic jacks to handle the job. With the erection of a fourth stack now underway and completion comple-tion of other related work, officials offic-ials of the division report the expansion ex-pansion project is more than 60 per cent complete. The project was started in June of 1958. The plant jiddition will increase the Central Power tation's generating gener-ating capacity from its present 100,000 kilowatt capacity to 175,-000 175,-000 kilowatts. Present operating facilities include a 50,000 kilowatt generator and two 25,000 kilowatt generator. In general, the project includes a 20-foot concrete and brick ex tension to the former building, a new boiler, cooling towers, a circulating cir-culating water system, electrical switch equipment and related facilities. fa-cilities. The expansion will insure adequate ade-quate electric energy to meet the growing demands of the mine, mills and refinery of the Utah Copper Division, officials said. It i's part of the Division's program to improve operating efficiency and help insure in-sure future successful operations. The Garfield smelter, acquired at the first of this year by the Utah Copper Division, has its own electrical elec-trical power plant, it was explained. 1 II" r' " 1 ill " 1" -nj 11 milium mimi MKijygmQfe&- ' ) fit X, : VS3Lrf i - ' If ' , j- At ' fVlv?W'Sk .f , V V ii i -i A 178-ton steam generator is supported by 30 feet of cribbing prior to being placed on it foundation foun-dation at Utah Copper Division' central power station.
