Show Harold Chesler, owner and operator op-erator of Princes Theatre and former city councilman, was appointed ap-pointed permanent city judge by the city council to succeed the late Judge F. A. Miller. A new Key Club of 25 members was formally chartered at Bingham High School January 27 under sponsorship of the Midvale Ki-wanis Ki-wanis Club. FEBRUARY 7 Purchase of Consolidated Cop-permines Cop-permines Corp. mining properties in White Pine County, Ely, Nev., by Kennecott Copper Corp., was announced by J. C. Kinnear Jr., general manager of Kennecott's Nevada Mines Division. Kennecott took possession of its new holdings on February 1st. Bingham area contributions to the 1958 March of Dimes Mothers March on Polio porchlight drive on January 30 totaled $357.38, Mrs. Harold Chesler, Bingham area chairman, reported. ' Miss Bridget Margaret Sullivan and Cloyd James Combs were married mar-ried February I at Elko, Nev. FEBRUARY 14 A baseball mass meeting was called by B.D.A.A. for the purpose of acquainting everyone in the Bingham area with the plans for organizing and carrying on a boys baseball program. Mrs. Nellie Btownlee, 73, former form-er Bingham resident and wife of a former Bingham mayor and businessman, busi-nessman, died February 7 at Long Beach, Calif. Over 350 high school students from Salt Lake City, Murray, Granite Gran-ite and .Jordan School Districts, toured facilities of Kennecott Copper Cop-per Corp. on February II, Science Youth Day. The Utah Copper Division's Di-vision's electrolytic copper refinery near Magna was host to 255 science sci-ence and mathematics students from Granite, Jordan, Bingham, Cyprus, Olympus and Murray High Schools. Students from other high schools in mentioned school dis tricts visited the Kennecott Western West-ern Division's Research Center near U. of U. campus. A check for $5,250.00, which is the 1958 allotment from the Salt Lake Area United Fund to the Bingham District Activity Fund, was received this week by F. C. Oswald, Activity Fund chairman. An experimental rod mill is currently being installed at the Arthur ore concentrating mill of the Utah Copper Division of Kennecott Ken-necott Copper Corp. according to F. C. Green, assistant general manager. man-ager. Bingham district Democrats and Republicans met Monday night in separate district mass meetings and elected delegates to the county and state party conventions and officers offic-ers to serve their districts for the next two years. Miss Jackie Hall of Sandy and Harold Smith of Copperton were married February 7 in Sandy. FEBRUARY 21 Moving of Holy Rosary Church from Carr Fork to it new location in lower BCO Hall on Bingham's Main Street, which has been remodeled re-modeled into a chapel which will be able to accommodate as many as the old church, at the end of this week was announced. Last mass to be sung in the old church, which has served the community 50 years, was to be Sunday, February Feb-ruary 23. Change in the ownership and management of the Copperton Confectionery and Utah Oil Service Ser-vice Station at Copperton wa announced. an-nounced. Tim and Ruth Ablett who have operated the business for the past six years, sold their interests to Mrs. John E. Greene, who assumed as-sumed management of the business Monday. Mrs. Greene will run the confectionery and Ray Taylor will operate the service station. A mid-February wedding was that of Miss Gay Armitstead and Stephen L. Downs, both of Copperton, Cop-perton, who were married Febru- ary 15. Bingham Women's Civic Club observed the club's 38th birthday with a dinner and program at the Civic Center February 12. JANUARY 3 Mild weather prevoiled in the area at the beginning of the new year with temperatures averaging a high of 32 and a low of 22 during dur-ing the first week of the year. Aron Morris Gaurhat, 73, Salt Lake City, former oldtime Bingham resident, died Christmas day in a Salt Lake hospital of a lingering illness. He and his twin brother, Isador M. Gauchat of Salt Lake were the first twins born in Bingham Bing-ham Canyon. Patrick B. Hylancl, 8 3. Salt Lake City, former Bingham resident and well known Utah mine operator, passed away January 1st in a Salt Lake rest home of causes incident to age. To be installed January 7th as officers of the Bingham Volunteer Fire Dept. for 1958 were Hugo Bianchi, president: Boyd Anderson, vice president; Dean Ham, secretary; secre-tary; Lawrence West, treasurer; John J. Creedon, chief, and Ross 1. Cushing, assistant chief. Couples who began the new year as Mr. and Mrs. included Miss Ann Marie Deakin and Malcolm James Robertson who married December De-cember 28; Miss Terry Rae Bul lock and John F. Mannion of Copperton Cop-perton who were married December Decem-ber 28 at St. George; and Miss Ursula Yvonne Bell of Salt Lake City and George A. Former Bingham resident Frank Rino, 55, of Salt Luke City, died of a heart attack while at work Tuesday morning at Utah Copper Division shops of Kennecott Copper Cop-per Corp. at Bingham. Mrs. Emelia Rosa, 46, Bingham, died of natural causes the morning of January 8. Funeral services for Joseph E, Percy, 81, former Bingham resident, resi-dent, now of Bennion, who died January 8 in a Salt Lake hospital of causes incident to age, were held January 13. Miss Joe . Ann Anderson, Cop-ptrton, Cop-ptrton, became the bride of Harold John Yates, also of Copperton in a quiet home ceremony January 4. The marriage of Miss Helen Austin, Aus-tin, former Highland Boy resident, and Lloyd L. Hogden, Jamestown, N. Dak. on December 21, 1957. in Seattle, Wash., was announced. JANUARY 17 Frank Zaccaria was again reelected re-elected president of the Bingham District Athletic Association. Nick Yengich was elected president presi-dent of the R. C. Gemmell Memorial Mem-orial Club for 1958. Miss Angle Tafoya of Lark and Burke C. Pace of Salt Lake City were married January 4 in Nevada. JANUARY 24 Voting districts in Jordan School District, including Precinct Ten, comprising Bingham and Lark, have been revised by the county clerk's office. Many changes have been made and all numbers have been changed and will be in effect at the nex't election it was announced. an-nounced. Fire losses in Bingham during 195 7 were down as compared to the year previous. According to the annual fire report, the Bingham Volunteer Fire Dept. answered 36 calls during the year of which 16 were city calls, 18 were in the county and two were for the re-suscitator. re-suscitator. Total damage in city fires was listed at $425.00 as compared com-pared with $5,473.00 in 1956. Mrs. Rose Alishio Compagno, 52, Bingham, passed away January 20 in aSalt Lake hospital of a heart ailment. Former Bingham resident for many years Mrs. Jean Bennie Coris, 61, died at her home in Midvale after a lingering illness January 16. Floyd L. DeM.ll, Butlerville, 35-year-old copper mine worker and father of four children, was killed instantly- early Tuesday at the Bingham mine when he fell from a loaded waste train and was crush ed beneath its wheels. Nearly $13,000 has been paid Utah Copper Division employees under the company's Suggestion System and Patent Plan since it was introduced in April of last year it was announced. It was reported re-ported also that some 350 individual individ-ual employees shared in the $13,-000 $13,-000 payment over the eight-month period. Miss DeCarma Lancaster of Copperton Cop-perton and Jerry Tuller, Las Vegas, Ve-gas, Nev., were marrieed January 1 5 at Copperton. JANUARY 31 Former Copperton boy, George Martin Petersen, 18, a navy seaman sea-man stationed aboard the USS Pickering berthed at Long Beach. Calif., was fatally injured January 27 when a car he was driving overturned over-turned on a curve at El Morro Bay just north of Laguna Beach, Calif. hub caps with name and license number. As a result of its outstanding safety record during 1957, the Utah Copper Division of Kennecott Copper Corp. has been awarded ihe National Safety Council's highest high-est industrial award. The Division qualified for the coveted Award of Honor by having an accident frequency fre-quency rate of only 3.75 accidents per million man hours worked compared to the surface mining industry's in-dustry's national average of 11.19. The Utah mining, milling and refining re-fining operation was one of only four similar operations in the Unit-ed Unit-ed States which qualified for the I Award of Honor for iti safety record re-cord during 1957. Mrs. Dan Groves, Copperton, was elected president of the Woman's Wo-man's Society of Christian Service of St. Paul's Community Church. Mrs. Royal Spratling was elected president of the Bingham High School P-TA for ensuing year. Newly established is the Division Di-vision department of quality control, con-trol, which will be headed by a quality control engineer, who will be responsible to J. C. Included in the organizational changes is the separation of the ore haulage department and the central power station operation from the mills. At the mine, title! for R. F. Cough and J. A. MARCH 14 Crew of the Utah Construction Co. have passed the half way mark in drilling Kennecott Copper's new 18,000 foot or haulage tunnel at Bingham Canyon. A total of 10,900 feet was reached this week on the $12 million project which will connect con-nect the bottom of the open pit copper mine with Copperton Assembly As-sembly Yards. Started in November of 1956, completion is expected by I960. St. Paul's Community Church was the name finally selected by members of the Community Methodist Me-thodist Church as the new name for their church at Copperton which serves five communities Highland Boy, Copperfield, Bing ham, Copperton and Lark. Both the Bingham Junior and Intermediate CYO teams, playing in the state CYO tournament last week end in Judge Memorial gymnasium, gym-nasium, brought home trophies. The CYO Intermediate team took first place in the league and first place in the tournament, and the CYO Juniors came home with the sportsmanship trophy. APRIL 4 Bingham-Midvale F. O. E. Aerie No. 659 celebrated their 54th anniversary an-niversary with a dinner, program and dance March 29. 142 pints of blood was collected when the mobile blood procurement procure-ment unit of the American Red Cross was here Wednesday, according accor-ding to Ross Pino, blood drive chair man. More than 180 leaders in business, busi-ness, industry and government honored L. F. Pett, retiring general gen-eral manager of Utah Copper Division, Di-vision, Kennecott Copper Corp., April I 7 at a testimonial dinner in the Alta Club. Mr. Pett will retire May 1st after five years as general manager of the firm. He joined the company in 1922 as a computer in the division's engineering department de-partment at the Bingham mine.
