M. .Throckmorton, veteran locomotive engineer at Kennecott' huge open'pit mine here has been awarded $500 for a suggestion reducing re-ducing wear on locomotive brakes. Mr. Throckmorton, of 209 We.t State Highway, Copperton, was paid the award under the Utah Copper Division's suggestion system sys-tem and patent plan program. He suggested installing a stabilizing rod between the brakeshoe hanger on opposite sides of the locomotives. locomo-tives. The rod prevents the brake-shoe brake-shoe from slipping off the wheel. Utah Division officials said- the suggestion will save an estimated $2,000 during the first year it is in effect. It will have application on 60 of the mine's 75 locomotives. jr , m a MARVIN THROCKMORTON Meanwhile, other top award winners recently received checks. Carvell G. Smith, of 2262 West, 6200 South, Murray, carman at the Utah Magna Mill car shop, received receiv-ed $295 for a suggestion on re-threading re-threading used car plate bolts. The suggestion will save an estimated $ I, I 75 the first year. Leland J. Shelton, of 7200 South 94 East, Midvale, electrician at the mine, received a $ 1 60 award for a suggestion on adapting wedge plug bonds for use on track rail. Al T. Slater, of 891 South Fourth East, Sandy, welder at the mine, was paid $145 for a suggestion on using - a . harder steel for dozer blade corner plates to reduce wear. A total of 43 other award payments pay-ments were made to employees during- the month of October. They amounted to $2,200. Since the program, pro-gram, was inaugurated in April of 1957, a total of 947 suggestions from employees have been adopted adopt-ed by the Division. They represent a total award payment of $34,433, |
