Show Thursday, April 13, 1989 Chronicle - Page Eleven season opens against Lady Ute Softball By Loren Jorgensen Often coaches like to schedule weak teams to start a season in order to assure a strong start. But when the Lady Ute softball team opens the conference season today and Saturday, the exact opposite will occur. Utah, which tied for the HCAC title a year ago, is in Omaha, Neb., today for a doubleheader against Creighton. Saturday Ute agenda for a twinbill in Fort ninth-ranke14th-ranke- d Colorado State is on the d Collins. "We start conference play against the Iboacdl fl cult than theirs, which should help us," Carr said. "However, all of those highest-ranke- d teams," Coach Norma Carr said. "Both Creighton and Colorado State have good records and know they can win." After a slow start, the Utes evened league's Chronicle sports writer wins give Creighton and CSU tremendous momentum, which favors them." The starting pitchers for the Utes will be freshman Janet Womack and Paula Potter, a senior. Potter leads the team with a 3 record, while Womack has shaken off a slow start to post a 8 record. Lisa Glassford, who owns Utah's lowest ERA at 1.78, will pitch in relief. Despite the high caliber of Utah's opening HCAC trip, Carr is feeling good about her team's chances. "We're back up at .500 and are playing really solid ball. If we continue to play with consistency we'll be in good shape," the coach concluded. 6-- 7-- Dig- - from page ten Moller gave top priority to the mountains. Guess where he ended up? With monstrous ambitions and unrefined skills, Moller arrived in Utah last fall to foster his obsession. Last weekend in Vermont the from took center in the National Fla., stage Jupiter, Collegiate Snowboarding Championships. Moller placed fifth in the slalom and fourth in.the half pipe. Teople laughed at my Burton Mystery Air freestyle board in the slalom," Moller explained. "Those hardcore racers didn't think it could hold an edge in the ice." While silencing skeptics and flying with the elite, Moller hasn't left the nest completely. He still spends the summer months surfing for Pro Tech Surf Designs. One would expect the entire nation to greet the arrival of snowboards with open arms, but it's been an uphill climb. Snowboarding made its debut in the late 1960s. The 'snurfer,' basically a plank of wood about 5 inches wide and 3 feet high, was the best technology offered. e As recently as 1985, snowboards had water bindings that didn't release. The boards didn't bite in the d snow and were much more primitive than ex-wanna-- be : ski-typ- hard-packe- the skis. high-tec- h Inexperienced boarders confined to flailing features spelled trouble. For this reason, Alta ski resort banned them after a experiment. Just two years ago , snowboard manufacturers prescribed an antidote. Sharp metal edges now guide them through the iciest terrain. d "Once people see how snowboards carve on the surfaces and feel the sensation they can get," said Drew Hicken; manager of Salty Peaks Snowboard Shop, "they won't ever go back to skis." Local, as well as national, ski resorts are bowing to the snowboard hordes. Park demands of the West and Brighton have surrendered completely, while Snowbird's on a trial basis. "I still prefer skis for the really intense moguls," Hicken admitted. "'But for powder, jumps, slush and hard packed, the snowboard rules." iy Rentals are a meager $10 per day and boards normally are in the $225-$30- 0 (spring selling from $325-$45- 0 clear-ouprice range. one-mon- th hard-packe- . , : ever-expandi- ng All PICK UP YOUR SPONSOR SHEETS TODAY t) "" i . . .
