Show Chronicle - Page Fire Thursday, April 13, 1989 EDITORIAL KM waves 5 to to-teDE- . aloemis? NASA scientists and various independent researchers have set up technologically advanced radio receivers around the nation. This fact is not, by itself, interesting. The curious aspect of this action is the motive-th- ey hope to pick up extraterrestrial broadcasts. The theory is that advanced civilizations based on other planets might be trying to talk to the inhabitants of the Earth. In the spirit of reciprocity, we earthlings are sending our own messages out into the cosmos. This opens a Pandora's box of speculation. What kinds of messages are we sending? Isn't it a little vain to assume that other civilizations would care to hear our "down-to-eartopinions? Moreover, what kinds of messages do we hope to receive? Perhaps, they could provide the answers to a variety of questions--hoto h" ' m riimiriifrirf i iw r - " ' . r w end wars, famine, hunger and strife. Unfortunately, we have had numerous prophets and philosophers of our own-- we killed them. If we didn't listen to earthlings, it is naive to assume we would listen to these "meddling outsiders." Speaking of meddling, if other beings truly are communicating with us via radio waves, what are we going to do with all the people we committed to insane asylums for "imagining" they were receiving intergalactic Perhaps the greatest strength of the Who Cares? The Flaming Lips??? Celeste Rosell Editor: One evening, while listening to the 6 o'clock news, I was incensed by a Princeton physicist (Dr. Happer) who attacked Dr. Pons and Dr. Fleischmann's research into nuclear fusion. This man, in a fit of jealousy, deliberately. tried, to .smear our heroes'..credibility. I realize that research of any kind must stand the' acid test of close scientific scrutiny, but this guy hasn't even read their publication (it wasn't out at the time). Worst of all, another "scientist" reprehensibly claimed the whole project a failure. Why? There isn't any application for nuclear weapons. Its only use-sa- fe, pollution-freinexhaustible, world-savin- g energy. Why must every scientific discovery be mulled over for its military worth? I thought the whole idea of fusion was to solve the energy crisis. Obviously, that must have only been an afterthought.
